DS is 1 and he likes to hold a spoon and put it in his mouth, but I think it's more for chewing than actually eating. No plate yet, but I haven't tried either. We recently checked out a new Montessori school, and their requirement to be moved up from the 12-18 month class to the next class is proficient self feeding with a utensil. I was like oh! That's like supposed to be happening now! Oops. but totally not. Guess I should start trying to introduce him to it. But sometimes, it's still hit and miss when he self feeds with his hands if the item is small like puffs.

With my first I introduced it earlier but can't remember when and he is 5 now and still likes to eat with his hands but mostly picks at his food with his hands. My second used utensils probably around 8 months or so. He perfected using utensils at an earlier age, definitely before 12 months. He is still a great eater with utensils but is getting distracted by his big brother, teaching him horrible table manners. :( But he is great at drinking soup though! Every kid is different and I didn't push either of them to use utensils at an early age. Now, I have to tell them to take a bite.. speaking of.. have to go tell them to take a bite again right now. *sigh*

Pretty much immediately, not that they were used. If I was spoon feeding, for example, my son insisted on holding a spoon.

We started with a spoon around 15/16 months. We only sporadically use a plate now at 17 months. We're not consistent about it.

@Foodnerd81: seriously!! She loves feeding the dog so I figure we have a long time before she stops.

I guess I should start trying a fork and spoon with ER though. I feel so behind!

We have always done plates/bowls but she started using a spoon around 10 months, usually oats or cereal with yogurt so it wouldn't fall off. Around 1 we started giving her a fork and now at 15 months she really seems to be getting the hang of it. She refuses to start dinner without one, even though she mostly holds it and uses her other hand :silly:

At 6 months (with a spoon) but that got messy real quick, so I took it away and it was distracting her. We reintroduced utensils at 14 months (spoon, fork) and heavy real plates (Corelle)...she's been doing really well with it all. Still feeds herself with her hand half the time, but makes more attempts to use her spoon/fork or at least wants to just hold it during her meal.

My LO is 14 months and we just started experimenting with utensils. The bowl/plate must be heavy or else she will send it flying!

Today I gave her a bowl of cereal with milk. She got a few bites ion her mouth and then just scooped up some cereal and took it off the spoon with her free hand. I guess that is better than eating with hands only!

@sslm: @Trailmix: @Applesandbananas: I'm so glad you replied! I was like, omg is mine the only one just dropping things??

Her high chair tray is pretty small so I need to find a small enough plate to try out. But I still think she will just drop it.

@rahlyrah: Neither do we. I'm not too worried about when he gets the hang of a fork and spoon. Miraculously, he does drink from a cup, though. I think sippy cups were too hard for E after fast flow bottles.

We started using a separated plate or bento tray around nine months. Now, at one year, she wants to use utensils on her own. It's a bit messy, but she has suprisingly good accuracy.

When did you start giving your LO their food on a plate or a bowl? And when did they start using the spoon by themselves?

So far I just put my one year old's food on her tray and she still likes to drop more than I would like on the floor. I hardly ever spoon feed her, but we do do yogurt most mornings. Lately she's been trying to grab the spoon all the time so I load t and hand it to her, which she likes, but she often drops it on the floor after she eats the spoonful. It's loads of fun.

Curious when others started with both.
