charlie def mastered the straw cup way before the sippy cup. we introduced the straw cup maybe around 9 months? all a little blurry, but he didn't like actual sippy cups until he was much older.

I recently gave the Zoli Bot cup (got the rec from someone in this board) to my just turned 7 month old. She's getting the hang of it. I'm in no rush. It can sometimes take them a while to figure out sippies and straws, especially if there is a valve. One tip I've heard is removing the valve of a sippy at first so the water dribbles out more, then putting it back after a while when they realize they can get something out of it and drink.

Anyway, I like the Zoli Bot so far. Very flexible straw. I'm not worried about her poking her eye with it, FWIW!

It might be a bit early for the straw cup but I've definitely heard of babies using it before a year. We didn't try the straw cup until after a year. I did it around the same time that I put her on whole milk.

LO's 10.5 months old and no straw sippy cup yet. i just let her drink from a straw when we're out, or I'll get some water stuck in the straw and put it in her mouth.

We've been playing with a sippy cup for a couple of weeks now. Lo can only drink out of it if we hold it for her and tilt it up for her. I went to look at straw sippy cups and they all said 12+ months. Lo is only 6 1/2 months. Should we just wait for her to get a hang of her sippy or try the straw? I'm kind of worried she'll poke an eye out!
