We use the Stokke Tripp Trapp as a high chair, and it doesn't have a tray, so we need to use bowls and plates. When DD feeds herself, we use a bowl with a giant suction cup on the bottom. It stays stuck to the table, so at least she can't throw the bowl on the floor. She can still throw the food on the floor however, which is a common occurrence.

She is 10 months old, most of her food gets put into a bowl at first if only for posterity. It eventually ends up right on her tray. She uses her spoon or fork if I preload it for her, and when she is getting to the end of her meal we let her play with the spoon and fork in her mess of food.

My LO has been using this Skip Hop plate since he was maybe 8 months old. http://www.skiphop.com/product/matematandplate.html. He does really well with it but he has pulled it off the table and flung it on the floor a few times :/. At 10.5 months I haven't given him a spoon to use but he has grabbed the fork that comes with the plate set and he has fed himself with it if we put the food on the fork for him.

I still spoon feed him (although he eats very little puréed food) and he doesn't use pouches on his own yet either.

At around 1 year is when I started letting her make a giant mess with a spoon. I would give her a spoon and let her try and in the meantime use my own spoon to put food in her mouth. Then she'd see my spoon and want that so I'd give it to her and then pick up the one she had just dropped. :) Since then, feeds herself 90% of all her food. Even things like yogurt. Sometimes I have to help her get stuff onto her spoon but after that, she puts it right in her mouth.

We stated with bowls and plates at around 13 months because my husband thought it was "barbaric" of her to be eating everything off her tray. So now she gets her own plates and bowls. I'm on the lookout for the perfect compartmentalized plate.

LO is 9 months but doesnt use bowls or plates. I just put everything on the high chair tray. I bought a Boon suction bowl, but i am wondering whether she really needs it.

How old was your LO when they started using plates and bowls?

Also, when did you let them start feeding themselves with spoons? I still spoon feed her!
