Oh man! Seems like it varies huh? I feel like DD stopped putting everything in her mouth after 1 when she started walking.

E is still doing this at almost 3. Whereas, before, it was about experimentation, now its about defiance. Play doh, paint, chalk, crayons, bathwater, soap, shampoo, it all goes in. Pretty much the only thing she doesn't try to eat is her dinner!

I was just thinking recently that we should ideally use (in everyday life) a different word for drinkable water to distinguish it from all other water. That must be confusing to a kid. It's all called water, but they want you to drink some kinds but not others?

I thought mine had outgrown it a long time ago, but now at almost 3, he's back to putting random stuff in his mouth. He thinks it's funny! 😣

I think A has outgrown it. Maybe around 18 months she was over it? I still find things in B's mouth, but not as frequently. He gets this telltale look on his face and I just know he has something in his mouth. He's really good at spitting things out immediately, though.

DS never ate weird things like that but at three he still drinks bath water and pool water when I tell him not to. Drives me nuts.

@Mrs. Champagne: I haven't even bought her play doh because I'm certain it would be the same. Have I mentioned that she refused to even TASTE the cake I made her for her birthday last week? And we went out for ice cream for the first time on Sunday and she reluctantly took one bite and ran away.

@Mae: ugh yes with play doh he knows he isn't allowed but holds it up to his mouth with a devilish grin. He often loses play doh in like 2 seconds because we also take away after 1 warning.

@Mrs. Champagne: Yea she isn't so bad with just mouthing things randomly like a baby does. But it's like... specific gross things. And I know a big part of it is my reaction. She thinks it is hilarious when I tell her no. She'll even take a bite of chalk and go "ew yucky" but then try to take another bite. So far we just cope by doing 1 warning and when she does it again the item goes away. But like, we'd have a lot more fun if the chalk could stay out more than 5 min kiddo.

Hmmm he's been ok with random objects (ie rocks) lately. But still tries to drink any water. And today had a leaf in his mouth!!! He turned 2 in March.

LO just turned 2 and she's driving me nuts with the eating things that are not food. She seemed to get better about this for a while in the last year but recently it has gotten way worse again. The worst offenders for non-food things she wants to eat: crayons, chalk, bubble solution (she just wants to dip the wand and lick it rather than blow bubbles..) and non-potable water (bath water, water table water, fountain water, any water that is not from a cup).

When did your kid stop doing this?
