My dd leaves them sometimes and takes them out sometimes, it's just hit or miss. The more I try the less irritating they are to her, but sometimes she just happens to put her hand on her head and realize it's there and then take it out just because.

Sorry, I realize that doesn't help much.

At 18 mo she still takes them out most of the time. If I put them in while she's distracted, they'll stay in longer. She's better about keeping hair bands in than clips. We use the soft fabric bands.

LMW won't keep clips in her hair and they don't stay very well anyway (she's almost 2). But we have to put a pony or pigtails at the top of her head or her eyes are completely covered in hair! I don't want to cut bangs so she's got her hair tied up every day, all day. She pulls it out sometimes but not often.

she won't keep a clip in (so I don't try, she actually rips hair out trying to get it out!!)

I kept putting ponytails in every day. she's used to it now and leaves them alone!

DD was notorious for ripping things out of her hair. We just had to monitor her and tell her no. Lots of crying but it took about 3 months for her to stop.

This question reminded me of a family of girls I used to babysit for. I treated them like living dolls, dressing them up and doing their hair. The mom was amazed that I could get the 1ish year old to leave her hair alone. When the girl would move her hand to her hair, I would gently say, "Oh no, we leave that in! It looks so nice," and then distract her. If she did take it out, I put it right back in. I could do that b/c I was close by and giving her 100% of my attention. I think she still ripped them out when she was with her mom!

E goes for them if she sees them. She'll do pigtails with the teeny tiny rubber bands but if she sees them in a mirror, it's like tunnel vision...MUST REMOVE. I can't trust her with clips anymore :(

We used the small rubber bands that are horrible for pulling out hair up until about a month ago (almost 3). They were the only thing that I could wrap tight enough so she had a harder time pulling them out.

She has straight fine hair so no type of barrette will stay in. We are finally to using the small covered elastics and she still pulls them out, but will let someone fix her hair.

We've got plain colored ones, the jeweled flower ones (LO loves those), some painted polka dot/striped ones . . . . definitely not expensive!

@MsLipGloss: What kind of barrettes are you using? Since both our LO's have fine hair. All I have are cute ones from etsy. Maybe I need cheap ones for day care. I haven't tried those holders. I will get some at Target this weekend.

@Smurfette: Hmmmm . . . I will say that placement is key. Definitely a snap clip toward the top of her head seems to work best right now (as opposed to it being more on the side of her head). But I haven't been using them for that long (only for a couple of weeks), so I haven't lost any . . . YET. (I do leave a bag of exra barrettes in her daycare bag though).

What about the terry-like mini pony holders - have you tried those?

@Smurfette: For now, I am sticking to barrettes . . . her daycare teachers have put LO's hair into a top pony before, but I had to cut the tiny elastic band out at the end of the day (and was not happy about it, either), and I know that LO was ready for it to be out as well. I think it depends on just how *clean/neat* the 'do is . . . it's so easy to pull a few baby hairs!

@heartonastring: That is what I have to do as well!! This morning she woke up late, so we just had time for milk before we left and she let me put the pony in but then wanted it out.

I wonder if I need a better tie, maybe these pull her hair or something?

@heartonastring: It is has been more then a couple days!! She would let her old teacher put them in, without fighting or being distracted) and would leave them in all day. But for me, nope! This morning she ripped out her pony out after 2 mins. Yesterday her new teachers said that one piggy was gone by 10 and the other 11.

Wondering the same thing!! DD is 15 months and we have had to put her hair up since before she was 1. The last 3 weeks, we have been unable to keep any ponytails, barrettes, etc in and it's so annoying because she can't see anything when it's not pulled back. Any tips are greatly appreciated!!
