@cascademom: Thanks for your input! I'll try that tactic because right now, I'm dragging the potential lovey everywhere we go!

@Alivoo01: Only at bed and nap times are when he gets his lovey. He likes to pull it out of his crib now, but he associates sleep with his lovey. When we go on car trips around his nap or bedtime, he gets it then too.

@cascademom: I like the Angel Dear lovey! When you first introduced him to the lovey, did you give it to him only at bed/nap times or did you take it with you every where you went?

@Alivoo01: Ours is an Angel Dear lovey that's a blue bunny with floppy ears. He loves it. His other lovey is a Taggies blanket. He likes to sleep with them around his face or play with the bunny's ears and face.

LO scratched a lot when he was just born. We had mittens on him all the time. Nothing special just the carter or gerber mittens (the ones you get in sets of 3). BUT he seemed to stop scratching at about the 6 months mark. I think the mittens must have been done the trick for us. :)

We had a lot of mittens for him... I didn't even know till I was showing off pictures of LO to my coworkers and they were like wow you have a lot mittens!

@Cherrybee: I thought him sucking on his fingers/hand would help him self soothe while sleep training but it didn't. He would grab for his face instead so he's been sleeping in newborn/infant gloves the past few days. He's sucking on the glove which is gross and stinky, but it doesn't seem to bother him it's fabric vs his real hand.

@cascademom: What is your LO's lovey? I'm open to suggestions while we try to find THE one.

It's already been suggested, but the lovey reduced the scratching for us. I would say to keep trying with the lovey. My LO is almost 16 months old and likes his lovey in the morning for comfort as he's getting ready. He cries when he has to leave it in his crib for the day. It's his source of comfort and where he can control his emotions he can't fully verbalize yet.

I've been wondering this too! E is almost 5 months and she still does it - I put her to bed with socks on her hands but I'm planning to sleep train in the new year and I think she might need to find her thumb so she can self soothe..... nightmare!

Mine still tried 5.5 months) but I able to get her nails ridiculously short using Piyo Piyo nail scissors every 2 days and that seems to do the trick. Sometimes I also file her nails after cutting to make sure no sharp points after the cutting.

15 months and we still get scratches. I usually put some Aquaphor (or Lanolin) on them to help them heal.

@hilsy85: I've tried introducing a lovey to him, but he hasn't responded to any one yet... Not sure what else to do to get him to take one as his lovey.

@lawbee11: @Bookish: C is like this too! I can clip his nails the day before and even round out the corners so there isn't a sharp edge and he still slices and dices. Ugh!!

@lawbee11: Going to check out the zipadee now!

G is 5.5 months and still does it. We trim her nails every two days and she still manages to gouge the heck out of herself... I'm pretty sure she's going to have a scar from one of them! Ugh!!!

My Lo is almost 14 months and just left a big scratch on his nose yesterday :( I just make sure to trim his nails often! Giving him a lovey helped, as he would rub his face with his lovey instead of his fingers.

DS is 5 months old. When he's upset or first waking up from sleep, his immediate reaction is to grab a hold of his face and scratch the holy bujeebuzz out of it. Currently, it looks like a cat went to town on it because I was sleep training last week. It's just not light stratches either, they're fairly deep gashes! I've resorted to putting newborn gloves on his hands at night to prevent further damage. His face looks terrible and it breaks my heart because it looks painful!

Any advice on how to prevent him from doing this? When did your LO stop scratching at their face?
