@SweetiePie: that's exactly the type of thing I think I will get wont work with our current backless stools but a friend has a regular, sturdy stool with a back that I can borrow. I think of we have a big enough kitchen and table by the time the baby starts solids we will either use that as her primary chair or get the IKEA one.

We skipped the high chair and opted instead for a booster seat (with tray option). Now that she's older she eats at the table without the tray. It has been a great option for us, given our smaller living space!

We also eat at the island as that's our kitchen table. It's a bit island that has chairs on either side. We had DS1 in the clip on chair until DS2 was ready to join us at the table when he was 6 mo. I was so worried b/c our chairs are super heavy and if he were to push off of the table, it would mean a big injury. However, we transitioned him to the chairs and it's been a lot smoother than I thought it would be. He can even climb up and down on is own. I should mention that he's 3. We just can't ever leave him alone, which we would try not to do anyways but there have been times when you need to run into the other room for something.

At 2.5 she has decided she wants to sit in a regular chair which works fine for me because I will need our high chair for DD2 in a couple of months. I'll get her the oxo tot booster , I like that it's portable

I'm not sure if it would work with the type of stools you have or plan to get, but we have the Fisher Price easy clean (I think that's what it's called) at my parents house and it's awesome. I kinda regret having a full sized highchair in our apartment. And it's super cheap so if you try and it doesn't work it won't hurt so much. I think it's $30.

LO is almost 2.5 and still sits in her high chair. She calls it "my chair" and actually really likes it so I don't see us moving her out of it anytime soon.

@oliviaoblivia: thank you! It would be so nice if they were the same color as the chair. While I was not paying attention yesterday she squeezed an entire pouch of purple food onto herself and the straps.

@youboots: ugh. The straps are the one thing that drives me nuts about it.... But it would be worse with other chairs. Sometimes I fill a bowl with warm water and oxyclean and rest it on the seat and get as much of the straps submerged as possible.
When I'm ambitious I take the side support off and wiggle the straps off and give them a full soak.

As annoying as that is, I still bought two more chairs so it wasn't a big deterrent.

We are 4 now but we were using a high chair until when he was 3+ years old. We just didn't have a good solution before that because of how our house was used to be. Then we went under a major kitchen and first floor remodeling when he was 3+ and we ditched the high chair then. He was just eating at our temporary "dining station" at a coffee table we set up on the 2nd floor guest bedroom with the rest of us. Haha.

When remodeling was done, we have a beautiful island and we bought these chairs. I can not praise them more:

http://www.cb2.com/phoenix-carbon-grey-24-counter-stool/s274692?a=501&campaignid=212254869&adgroupid=14977329789&targetid=pla-18283950120&adpos=1o5&creative=55841373549&device=c&matchtype=&network=g&gclid=CI-AzMKVysoCFYQlgQodUK4DDw

It is sturdy, easy to clean/wipe, not outrageously expensive, and he climbs up and down all by himself to eat at the kitchen counter! I shopped and shopped and this is the best. If he starts to come up and down during mealtime and just won't focus on eating, I have a booster seat and if I put it on this kitchen stool, put him on and scoot him close to the counter, he won't be able to come down. hahaha. So look into it and see if it works for you!

We ditched the high chair when she was about 18 months old because she liked to take herself to and from the table freely (we had a kiddie table and chairs and all ate there!). Now she's big enough, we have one of the kids chairs from Ikea that's like a little chair but has really long legs, so she's at the right height at the table, yet can come and go as she pleases.

@Foodnerd81: lol, strapping kids is not very RIE, but that's exactly what DH said when I told him about the no high chair concept when I initially came across it. "Don't you want to prevent the from leaving the table until everyone is finished?"

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: no we don't have space for a kid size table and chair, though she would love it and has eaten with my nephew at his while we visit. But she gets so distracted being able to get up and down by herself anyway, I prefer to strap her in to help her focus on meal time not play time (which is probably not very RIE). And we don't often all eat together as a family but I do almost always eat breakfast and lunch with her and always sit with her for dinner, even if I eat my dinner (in front of the TV) later. That's part of why we got the hook on chair instead of a free standing one that would be lower than the counter.

@sapphire: unless one or both parents sits with them too. Depending on when dinner takes place for the kid vs when parent arrives home mealtime may not be family time anyway.

We typically eat on the floor or couch, so a set up like this would totally work in my house.

Do you have kid size table & chairs she could use instead?

One of the RIE chapters I was reading talked about not using high chairs at all. Once LOs can support themselves it was suggested to feed them at their own kidsize table. The book mentioned babies like to feel the ground under them and be able to move away from the table on their own. Just a thought

I should also add I wouldn't mind not having to pick her up and down into the high chair- it's pretty annoying! She loved to climb up into our bar stools (which is off limits unless one of us is there and says it's ok, and which has resulted in several time outs this week alone...) She gets distracted if she can get up and walk away so something I can buckle her in is key.

We still primarily use the high chair (LO is only 17 months) but I was looking for something similar and found the Prince Lionheart booster. It straps to chair in 2 places and I can strap LO in - it's meeting our needs well. We take it on car trips too.

We still use it at three years. We have the tripp trapp, it's adjusted so that she climbs up and down herself. Love that thing.

I'd try a strap on booster with a stool.
