I'm relieved by this thread. DD1 is almost 4 and not ready to ditch nighttime pull-ups...she's been potty trained since 2.5 and naps in undies (and stays dry). But I just don't think there's any way to force her into being dry overnight until she's ready. She seems a bit less wet in the AM recently, so maybe it's progress? We'll see!

DS is 4 and still wears Pull-Ups. Every time I think we're going to ditch them, he has a night accident (in the Pull-Up). I'm not pushing though.

DS is 3.5 and still in a night time diaper. He always wakes up wet. He's fallen asleep for naps without one, and if he wets the bed he's so upset, so I'm not pushing it until he's consistently dry.

We just asked our pediatrician this at his 4 year appointment. He has been potty trained for about 6 months and he is still waking up with a wet pull up about 80% of the time. She said not to worry about it right now. She doesn't want us limiting fluids at night and it isn't really something we can train him to do. He needs to be able to wake up on his own and go, which he doesn't do right now.

I asked the same question a few months ago!

DS1 has been totally potty trained for a little over 3 months (he's 3). We used pullups at night. I told him once he could keep his pull up dry for a whole month overnight that we could switch him to undies and ditch the pullups. It took him 2 months or so, but we recently just ditched the pullups and we've been good so far!

That being said, I would just wait until she's ready and already waking up dry. Some kids take longer than others, and I don't think just having her wet the bed is going to help.

My 3.5 year old has been trained for over a year and is still in pull ups. He wakes up soaked almost every morning. Like someone else mentioned, if his pull up ever leaks he gets very upset about it and usually ends up crying, which then takes a while to calm him down to go back to sleep. I'm not going to intentionally make him (and me!) go through that!

LO potty trained a little before 2.5 years old. but I didn't do nap/night training until much later bc I was scared to. We did nap training first (kind of on accident bc she would fall asleep without diapers) and almost never had any accidents.

At 3 years, I bit the bullet and just put her in underwear bc we ran out of diapers, LO2 was coming soon, and why not? She was always consistently dry so I figured why not. In fact, she would wake up in the morning, take her own diapers off (we never used pull ups), and go potty by herself anyways. Well, she wet the bed like every night. I even gave up after two weeks and put her back in diapers bc I pregnant and tired of doing laundry. When she was back in diapers, she was dry. Finally, after a month, something just clicked and she rarely has any accidents. My husband goes to bed kind of late (1am) and he takes her sometimes in the middle of the night, just in case.

It was 6+ months before she got the night time deal. We ditched night diapers are 3y3m. My rule was 7 consecutive nights of dry and I'd be okay with getting rid of diapers. She went 5 nights dry frequently. After getting rid of diapers we had a handful of accidents.

DS is also 3.5 and still wakes up with a totally full nighttime pull up. I also put him in a cloth diaper for nap time and he keeps it dry sometimes but usually it is wet. I am working on nap time first but I'm not as worried about it because he'll eventually give up the nap.
My sister recommended getting him up to pee when DH and I go to bed so he gets used to getting up and being dry. We tried it but I think he would pee just before we'd get him because he'd already be wet and wouldn't be able to go more than a few drops. I think we'll try that method again soon.

It was actually right after day training because she was waking herself up at night, taking off her diaper and sitting down on the portable potty in her room. She was about 3 years and 2 months when she day trained. Night was probably the next week all on her own. It was probably the only thing about potty training that she cooperated on.

DD naturally stayed dry overnight a week after she was potty trained.
I put overnights on her every night for 2-3 weeks and finally ditched them bc I didn't wanna keep throwing away dry diapers.
She's never had an accident overnight 👍🏻

DS was potty trained at 26 months and at 3yr4months still wears overnights. He's been staying dry and waking up to go potty, so I'm planning on ditching the pull-up overnights once we run out.

LO1 is 30 months and started wearing undies overnight a few weeks ago (and hasn't had any overnight accidents.) He does get up a few times a week to pee overnight.

He actually started staying dry through the night before staying dry during the day. It definitely seems like something you have to be physically ready for. I can see intervening, though, if your child wakes to pee but just still does it in the diaper rather than getting up to use the toilet.

Day trained at 24 months. We didn't night train and I'm of the mindset that it isn't something can be trained. Probably around 2.5 she would consistently wake up dry overnight.

We probably used pull ups until she was 3 (can't remember exactly). I just really hated the thought of wet sheets in the middle of the night.

We have friends that have been day trained since they were 2 and at 5 they are still in pull-ups at night. Some wake up dry for weeks and occasionally have an accident and others always wake up with a wet pull up. Like pp said I don't think docs start to worry about it until after 6

My LO has been totally day trained since before Christmas, and she is still waking up every morning with a soaked pull up. We haven't attempted night time undies yet because she also drinks a lot of water overnight--yes, wakes in the middle of the night 1-2 times for water--and I don't want to force her to stop drinking.

My son was out of diapers within about 2 months of potty training. It would have been earlier, but he had a broken leg so we couldn't take the risk of getting the cast wet.

My DD has been potty trained for about 6 weeks and she is still in diapers at night. We tried diaper free a few times because she initially had a few dry diapers, but she just can't do yet. And I really hate changing sheets in the middle of the night.

Our pediatrician was very specific about not forcing night time potty training. I don't remember the specifics - something about may not be biologically ready and not wanting to restrict water at night (which causes other issues related to dehydration). She also mentioned that the developmental marker is that kids be dry overnight by the time they turn 6.

Mine day trained at 30 months and was night/nap trained a couple weeks later. I say a couple weeks but we kept her in diapers over night until she was dry overnight for two/three weeks. She was never a heavy wetter at night and before training very rarely was wet in the morning.

@DillonLion: My son has been potty trained for a year and he goes through periods of waking up dry and periods of waking up soaked. For 8 months after he potty trained, he woke at night and peed. Every night. We still kept him in a pull up. But now, he never wakes up at night and wakes wet a lot. Maybe I missed the boat and should have yanked the pull up when he was waking at night to pee....but we had an infant at the time and I did not want to be changing sheets MOTN. He's 4. I'm not worried though.

DS was a few months after daytime was conquered. It could have been sooner but I was so scared the moment he stopped wearing them he would pee. He had 1 overnight accident ever.

DD needed a little budge. It was 4 or 5 months and she was waking up soaked - I got the inkling that she was peeing right when she woke up though cuz her diapers felt warm.

So we ditched them and dealt with accidents. They weren't every night but it was a lot over 2-3 months and then one day she stopped.

She was out of diapers overnight by 30 months because she had stopped wetting them. There'd been a few accidents before we got there and she was REALLY distraught. She was soaking wet, shaking and cold. I would not recommend intentionally doing that.

I'm getting conflicting suggestions on how to ditch diapers for good with our LO (she's 3.5 and wears diapers only overnight).

One one side, the recommendations have been to let her sleep in a diaper at night until she wakes up dry naturally. And that it is totally a physiological thing that can't be forced. She'll start holding it overnight when she's ready. She's been in diapers at night only for well over 6 months now and never waking up dry, ever.

Then there's the other side (my DH) who wants to just ditch the diapers and deal with wet sheets for a while and let that be the catalyst to encourage her to start holding it or get up and use the bathroom if she needs to overnight.

What methods did you employ? How long did your LO wear diapers overnight only? This seems like a long stretch of time, but I have no frame of reference.
