@Sammyfab: I just wanted thank you again for your advice. DS woke up at 4am on Saturday and would not go back to sleep! So I kept him up until 8am and he had a huge 2 hour nap which got us on track for a 1pm second nap. Since then he has been waking up later and later in the morning. Yesterday he woke up at 7am and today he woke up at 6:30am. I am so happy that the early morning wake up cycle has been broken! Because of all that I've read about shorter awake time before the first nap, I would not have had the courage to keep him awake so long for the first nap if it were not for your encouragement, so THANK YOU!!

@Mrs. Yoyo: Eeew yikes! Poop is the culprit for many of our wakes, too. He's 6 months next week and I'm just holding my breath! He has taken at least one nap of an hour's length (or more) for the last 10 days. But he's also had a drippy nose that whole time so I'm not sure what to think. Only time will tell ; )

Right at 7 months. For a couple of weeks I would often drive him in the late afternoon to get him to take a short catnap if one or both of his other naps were too short. Soon, they were both 1.5-2 hours and we didn't need to do that anymore, thankfully.

@NerdBee: definitely try and keep him in bed until 6am. That quiet, stimulus-free time in the crib will help him get to a 9am nap if he wakes early. I've also read to aim for 9am and 2pm naps to get to a post-6 bedtime. Good luck!

@NerdBee: it's only the first nap that he's so tired for (because um he's only sleeping 10 hours at night...!) Otherwise he naps roughly every 2 hours and sometimes 2.5. I do get longer naps when I stretch his awake time but it's not substantial enough to justify a longer awake time (45 mins instead of 30). However, he has taken SOME longer naps since starting daycare a few weeks ago. But then there was the time change. His bedtime is 7 p.m.and sometimes it's 3 hours before bedtime (if he is up from the last nap at 4....) Basically things are a mess right now....I was just hoping that things would settle following the time change and we could get into a better routine. Blah.

@Sammyfab: thanks for the tips. I'll aim for a 9am first nap tomorrow regardless of when he wakes up. I was worried that it would screw up his entire day if he started his first nap overtired but he seems to be ok with longish awake times so we'll see!

@winniebee: have you tried pushing his awake time? At 6 months, my LO could stay awake for 2 to 2.5 hours. I had him on 2 hours for a while and his naps went back to 30 minutes. It was only when I lengthened his awake time to 2.5 hours did his naps get longer. He just got up from a 1h 45mjn nap after a 3h awake time.

@NerdBee: forcing a catnap never worked for us (my LO would fall asleep in the car) because a later bedtime =\= a later wake up. Doing the 3rd catnap with such high waketimes also may cause you to have too much total waketime during the day which may lead to overtiredness. It's tricky stuff!

And yes, I still do a 9:30 nap with a 5:30 wake up. My LO will wake up and play for the first bit then start whining/crying with about 10 minutes to go. But he's all smiles as soon as the lights turn on!

I'm trying to get out of the early wake time situation.....he's up at 5 most days and I put him down at 7 p.m. He takes naps at 6:30 and then roughly every 2 hours thereafter. I'm hoping that some schedule will start to emerge at daycare so that I can get him in a better routine.

@NerdBee: I have the same problem - I want to give my son a 9 a.m. nap, but it only works if he wakes at 7. When he wakes at 5, he is ready fro a nap by 6:30!

@Sammyfab: yeah I figure that I need to figure out how to break the pattern. If I can force a cat nap using the carrier as suggested by caffeinated, I can push his bed time later to his normal time.

What would you do if LO wakes up at 5:30am and cries until you get him at 6:30? Do you still put him down for his first nap at 9:30 even though he would be awake for 4 hours?

My LO transitioned at 6.5 months. Well, I forced it on him because we were having weird nights. I too follow waketimes but our schedule is fairly consistent with a 9:30 and 2:30 nap and 6-6:30 bedtime. I've never pushed the waketime before bed because my LO is most sensitive to it. If I want to stretch him to a later bedtime I usually add 10-15 minutes to the waketime before his 2nd nap. I also have a do-not-get-up-before 6:30 rule so that we can do a 9:30 nap. As long as you're getting you lo up at 5am and doing an 8am first nap you will be stuck in that early bedtime - early wake up schedule. :/

We do deal with early wake ups every now and then (5:30-5:45) but his sleep patterns are much more consistent now at 8 months so I'm trying to shift his schedule to a 7pm bedtime with a 6:30 wake up.

@NerdBee: Have you ever tried putting him the Ergo/carrier? Sometimes when i know she won't go down for a nap i'll walk around the neighbourhood until she falls asleep and she'll have a short nap in there. That way i can push her bedtime if i know she'll be too tired.

@NerdBee: She used to do that too, but it was only because she wasn't tired. She'll only allow "quiet crib time" if she's tired, but she'll start to fuss and yell for me after 20 minutes or so...for me, that's good enough to tide her over until bedtime. What's LO's max awake time right now?

@NerdBee: Sometimes 4-5.5 hours? It's not really me keeping her up. She's never been a great napper, so she just doesn't sleep a lot of times. Though she's not a great napper, she has always been a great sleeper at night. Her lack of sleep during the day has never really affected her nighttime sleep. It's rare that we don't get at least 8 hours straight at night and 10-11 overall.

My LO used to be a cat napper too but since sleep training he started to sleep longer and would wake up at around the same time. But after the time change his sleep changed and he started to refuse the third nap. :(

LO is almost 7 months and she will have 2 naps once in a while. If her second nap ends around 3-3:30, it's hard to get her down for a third nap! Yesterday she woke up at 3:30 from her last nap. I still put her down because she was sleepy and she had some "quiet" time for 20 minutes. I managed to have her stay awake until 6:50pm!

@c.sassy: what is the longest that you have ever kept your LO up for the 7-7:30 bedtime? Does it make her wake up more often in the middle of the night? I'm afraid to push LO's awake time too much because he is sleeping through the night finally and I don't want to mess that up.
