@FutureMrsMcK: E seems to be on a similar milestone path as my LO. She's always been a bit ahead with major physical milestones. From clapping things together (including my hands) to clapping a lot only took a couple of weeks though.

LO is 9.5 months and started clapping and waving around the same time about a month ago. She mostly claps at herself when she does something funny, she will clap and look at you with a big smile so you start clapping too. She waves all the time, except when people want her to wave at them! She will wait until you've left the room after saying "bye" for 15 minutes and then start waving :) She still doesn't point much, at least not at anything specific.

E has done none of those things yet. He's close to clapping...he'll clap objects together or make us clap our hands (by holding them) but hasn't done it himself. He hasn't even tried pointing or waving yet.

My LO started pointing and waving consistently around 11.5 months. He only waves when he wants to though, but he points a lot. In terms of expressive language, he's 12.5 months now and doesn't speak any words, not even mama and dada, which is frustrating when people ask and expect that he would, but I just think he's going to say it when he wants to. I really can't force him, ya know? I use "mama" and "dada" a LOT too, so it's not like he doesn't hear it from me! People just don't seem to understand that LOs develop at their own rate! Don't worry! :)

@BelugaBean: LO started waving around 10 months, but will not clap to save his life. I've been trying to get him to do this since he's been 6 months and he just has zero interest.

We did a lot of things to start getting him to wave...we started by waving at him randomly inside the house. Then we would turn the light on and off and say "on"..."off"...then tell him to say "hiya" to the light. Or "bye bye" to the light and show him how to wave to it. It was an every day thing as we walked down the stairs (we have a 2 story foyer, so he can see it at eye level).

My LO will be 11 months this weekend. He started waving around 9.5 months and is obsessed with waving at anyone and anything now, whether they wave back or not. He's also a VERY social kid though. (Definitely at the mercy of his physical skills - no interest in crawling or even pulling up at 11 months.)

He's not pointing yet. I think he's trying to figure it out, but hasn't gotten the "separate one finger from the rest" thing down. I once read that it's actually more important that they follow where you are pointing than actually point themselves. I forget what it's called.

She didn't like to wave or point. She would just say "uh" "UH" and assume we knew what she wanted. She started doing it consistently around 16 months

My LO started waving back (at me, DH, and my MIL) around 10.5ish months. And she points occasionally, but not regularly (she is 11 months now).

I meant to ask the doctor today but I forgot. The questionnaire I had to fill out said that they just like for one year olds to be doing one gesture and she is clapping now. She just started clapping more around 11.5 months though.

She's waved a couple of times but not often at all. And she's pointed maybe once. She's on track with everything else though and they don't seem to think she's off track, at least by their questions. She's hit more physical milestones earlier and seems to be trying to talk more. She's never really gestured to communicate, even though I've tried to get her to.

When did your LO wave and/or point more regularly? I've seen babies a few months younger wave and it honestly frustrates me when people try really hard to wave at her. I know they just want to see her wave back but she's not going to. She smiles and I just tell them she's shy. But some people will seriously try to get her to wave like 10 times (people as in cashiers and/or other customers at stores). They act confused when she's not waving back. People have also tried to get her to point before.
