It took about 3 weeks. There was some crustiness left behind that was eventually washed out, but no blood.

@Alivoo01: Xander's fell off around 2 weeks and it was similar to what you're describing. There was blood in his belly button and we'd clean it and then discover more later. It didn't seem to bother him, and we stopped noticing it after a week or two.

@matador84: Thankfully, it's not bleeding through his shirt. And when I inquired about umbilical cord care at the hospital, the nurse just said to keep it dry and clean. She said I could swab it with alcohol if I wanted, but not necessary.

@MamaMoose: We've been giving him sponge baths because I'm paranoid about getting it infected. It seems to be doing better today so yay!

Exactly 2 weeks. There was a bit of blood and a tiny bit of discharge. It was normal by the next day. We were told to wipe it clean with a warm washcloth and that once the bleeding stopped, he could face a bath.

@matador84: Can you elaborate on how much bleeding occurred? Did it ooze out of his belly button? If so, how often?

DS's seems to bleed, but hasn't really oozed out of his belly button. It coagulates in his belly button. When I give him a bath and clean it off, seems like the bleeding happens again and coagulates in the belly button. Should I call the pedi?

@Smurfette: You make me feel better about DS's falling off so early!

Pretty sure 2-3 weeks. I remember I had to take him to the pedi because his stump was bleeding and I was worried, she had to put some silver nitrate, I think it is on it? It fell off in the middle of the night one night.

The hospital provided us a mother's and baby's care book that I have found super useful as it addresses everything about coming home and what to expect the first few weeks/months. In the book, it mentioned the umbilical cord would fall off in a COUPLE of weeks. DS's umbilical cord fell off 1 week and 2 days after he came home. It was also a lil bloody when it did fall off. We didn't do anything to make it fall off and kept it clean and dry per instructions. Is this normal?

When did your LO's umbilical cord fall off? Was there some blood/drainage when it did? If so, how long did that last?
