Mine came in late, and the doctor said to give her formula.

It was a big mess. Here was our routine.
1. I would nurse (to try to get my milk to come in) when she would get frusterated, I would stop. I wouldn't force her if she wasn't getting anything.
2. I would pump for 1/2 hour on each side (again, to try to get my milk to come in, and so my LO could have at least some breast milk.)
3. While I was pumping, my hubby would feed our LO with breastflow bottles. The lactation consultant gave us strict instructions how to feed her so she wouldn't get used to the bottle. He had to wait until she opened her mouth before sticking it in her mouth, and take it out after every five sucks. It took him FOREVER to feed her. But it worked, she did go straight back to breastfeeding after that.

My milk came in after about 2 days of this... and then I ended up going to formula anyway. It was just too much pain, too many issues. Good luck to your friend!

day 3 with a c-section . If hers hasnt come in, Id have her call LLL or an LC and start pumping. She NEEDS to give formula at this point-enough to satiate the baby. Liv was only on formula for her first week (long story). I got her to EBF around 1 month old. She can do it =o)

Around day 4 for me. I'd strongly suggest finding a good lactation consultant to help your friend.

mine came in at 4 days with charlie and he was a c section. i thought mine hadn't come in with olive (vbac) because i was pumping so little when she was getting phototherapy, but i think it did and i was just producing very little. it was around day 5.

pumping will probably help her milk come in faster.

3 days.

She might want to call a local LLL leader to figure out a nurse/pump/formula schedule for getting milk to come in while preventing dehydration. From what I've heard it's good to offer the breast first so they suckle to help stimulate milk production, give formula, then offer the breast again. They also make at breast supplementers so formula is given as they suckle on the breast, that way they get the food and the breasts get the stimulation they need to make milk.

What day after giving birth did your milk come in? I think mine came in 5 or 6 days after. My friend who just had her first on 11/9 is freaking out because hers hasn't come in yet and the baby keeps screaming for food, and she's not sure how much formula to give her because she really wants to try to nurse exclusively.
