I had to supplement because she was small at birth (7 lb 7 oz), lost close to a pound, was really jaundiced, and couldn't stay awake to eat.
I'm wondering if this is why I never had a good supply...
If you do have to supplement, I would suggest pumping often to build up supply

Mine came in about 3 days later. They were worried at her first ped appt, but not enough to suggest supplementing though. They did have me come in the next day for a weight check. They wanted her to gain a half ounce, byt since my milk came in that night she gained 5 ounces overnight! It's perfectly normal for it to take 5 days, and like pp said, newborn bellies are teeny tiny, so generally your colostrum is enough! :)

Day 4 with pumping. It was a huge difference. I woke up that day really engorged, and went and pumped 4 ounces of mature white milk. I think if you're just nursing, you might not actually be able to tell. But you're doing fine! You don't need to stress.

Day 6 with my first and day 5 with my second. With my first he lost more than 10% of his body weight at his first appointment. I felt awful. He was screaming nonstop and we didn't know but he was just HUNGRY. We immediately started supplementing with formula but my milk came in the next day anyway. Then he packed on the pounds and he was fine.

With my second we supplemented with formula from the first hour, because she came out SCREAMING and did not stop until we gave her some formula. She sucked down 2 ounces and passed out. We still established breastfeeding by having her latch on first for every feeding on both sides then topping her off with formula.

One of my friends was going crazy because her milk wasn't coming in and she was so afraid it would never come in. It came in on day 10. Her OBGYN told her that one of her patients had her milk come in on day 21...!!

I gave birth on a Sunday and by Wednesday, despite feeding every 30 min or so, my milk still wasn't in. A nurse friend of mine said it should have been in and to get an LC stat. The LC came Thursday and got me a pump ASAP. With regular pumping sessions, it started coming in Friday and by Saturday I was totally engorged. I didn't need to supplement because I had a pretty good supply of colostrum to keep her satisfied until it came in.

Mine took about 5 days. I had a c-section though so I don't know if that's why it took longer. I supplemented on days 3-5 because LO had lost too much weight (she lost 12% by day 4 and gained some back when we were released from the hospital on day 5). We finger-fed and used a supplemental feeding system to give her the formula. I also pumped aggressively during days 3-5, pretty much constantly. Ever since then I've had a huge oversupply.

It took me 3-4 days. I could definitely tell by the 3rd day. I was like you, really worried she wasn't getting enough. She lost over 10% body weight and our ped wasn't worried. We had formula on hand to supplement a couple of times at the hospital, but only had to use it twice the first day we got home. By the 3rd day, I didn't need to supplement anymore and 4th day, I was dripping! Her first doctor visit on Day 5, and she was back up 6 oz.!

4-5 days and yes, we supplemented. The night we came home from the hospital she was crying and crying. It was awful. Being a first time mom I didnt know if it was typical newborn behavior or not. Nobody at the hospital even talked to me about possibly supplementing when I go home. I wish I knew! But I knew something was wrong because DDs lips were super chapped and she did not have any wet diapers. I called my pediatrician the next day and it turns out my DD was dehydrated and she said I needed to give her formula until my milk came in. Once I gave her formula she was soooo happy! Poor girl was hungry!

I gave birth Thursday night and my milk came in Monday morning. DD lost nearly 10% of her body weight but supplementing was never even mentioned (we weren't considering it anyway). Our MWs said that it isn't until they lose more than 10% that it starts to become a bit of a concern and as their tummies are only the size of a marble when they're newborn, the colostrum is more than enough to satisfy them for those first few days before milk comes in. Personally, unless advised to do so by a medical professional who has sound reasoning, I don't think there's any need to supplement if your DD has only lost 7% of her body weight and you've only given birth two days ago. You are well within normal parameters so I don't think there is any need to worry! :-)

Mine took about 3 days to come in - they had us supplement until then since he had high biliruben levels. We used a supplemental nursing system and then I had to pump after each feeding... I was so glad once the milk came in because feedings became so much easier!

it was day 3 that it really fully came in.... they never weighed LO at the hospital after the first day to see how much weight he was losing - i've heard others say that --- the next time he was weighed after being born was the 1 or 2 week check up i think.... that would stress me out if they said how much his weight was down!

we didn't supplement, i just nursed & nursed and then it came in & we were good.

congratulations, new mama!

oh sweetie, i empathize with how you feel.

i was really, really stressed out about my milk coming in, and had several very hormonal breakdowns about it. i kept seeing that people's milk generally came in around 5 days, so when mine didn't, i freaked. LO lost 10% weight almost immediately and the pediatrician recommended supplementing with formula, which we did for about a week.

i went to see a lactation consultant on day 6 and she recommended a hospital grade pump rental to help get my milk flow going. i had to pump after every nursing session, which was a pain, but it worked (too well, i actually did it for too long and ended up having oversupply issues). i LOVE my hospital grade pump and decided to extend the rental through the end of my maternity leave.

i think one of the factors contributing to my milk taking so long to come in was that LO was so sleepy during nursing (like, unusually so) that it wasn't enough to get my milk flowing. my boobs were swollen, but the milk wasn't really coming out, and i used the pump to help that along.

so for about a week, i would nurse 10-15 on each side, terrorizing my baby all the while with cheek rubs, foot tickles, blowing on his head, moving his arm, even using a wet towel...and then i would pump. i'm not saying this was fun, but it did work.

for what it's worth, i don't regret supplementing with formula at all. it only lasted a week (and i probably could have stopped sooner), and there were never any nipple confusion issues. in addition, it forced us to use the bottle early, which meant that i have no qualms about other people feeding him or giving him a bottle. i don't have to worry about introducing a bottle and how/whether he will take it (because he'll have to eventually when he goes to daycare), because he's been taking a bottle since early on, and i continue to give him 1 or 2 bottles a day so that DH can feed him and have that special time.

i bet your milk will come in ASAP, but if it doesn't and you have any issues/would like some empathy/have any questions, feel free to post on my wall!

@Smurfette: I know, it's so tough! They are sleepy little munchkins in the first few weeks...maybe try stripping her down to a diaper and then nursing her without a top on, so she's against your bare skin? I did that a lot the first few weeks.

Mine took 5 days and LO lost the full 10%! I was FREAKING out that she was starving but didn't want to supplement unless a dr. said it was necessary. We saw her pedi on day 5 and she was not really concerned. My milk came in literally at the appointment. She had us come back a few days later to check her weight and she had already gained 3 oz. She has definitely gained a lot since then but we don't get her weighed 'til the end of the week.

I had a failed induction and a c-section so I don't know if that has anything to do with when my milk came in. We did start skin to skin just about immediately. They gave her to me while I was still in the OR and we started nursing right away.

I voted 3, but it was more like 2.5. He lost 10% of his birthweight in that time but my midwives didn't seem worried. They say it's perfectly normal. I didn't supplement as I was too worried about the effects on supply, and my midwives said it wasn't necessary at that point anyway!
