Around 2 months is when the short naps started. It drove me a bit crazy and I thought there was something wrong with my baby who wouldn't sleep... She was doing 3 40 minute naps a day and I just didn't get it. Before that she would take longer naps on me sometimes, but I never had 2-3 hour naps and still don't at 9 months. Now they're 30-80 minutes typically. I think she has low sleep needs overall.

@SweetiePie: that's so funny cause I was a crazy mom convinced that something was seriously wrong with my first baby too. We even had GI studied done! He still sleeps very poorly :-(

Indeed it's hard to balance the demands of two children close in age.

I can't remember with DS1, but DS2 went through a period of short naps between around 2 months and 3 months, though I could often get him back to sleep if I went in. Now at 4 months he is back to decent naps.

Oh gosh... I am pulling my hair out with naps for my 5 month old... He pretty much STTN, but naps are terrible. Usually 2 to 3 30 minutes max. By the end of the day he is so cranky I want to pull my hair out. I have made bed time as early as possible (6:30pm). Some of these posts have definitely made me hope to get some longer naps in the future.

@Orchid: Me too! I'm so scarred from my sons over tiredness when he was a newborn! I was the insane mom taking him to the ped and pediatric GI's insisting there was something wrong when my ped finally said "girl, he's overtired". And it changed. My. Life. That's when our nice 2-3 hour naps started. (Of course there's a little more to it, but the initial realization of how long he should be awake at a time was what started the better napping). I'm so scared to have another someday because I'm afraid I won't be able to be as strict about the sleep as I was with my first!

So yeah, I generally look at what I might have done differently and revert it back to see if it helps get the sleep back on track. And people may think its crazy, but 15 minutes legitimately made a difference in my son being able to fall and stay asleep vs an overtired and wired mess! Of course all babies are different - but high sleep needs is a real thing! So try going back to no more than an hour.
If your LO2 is anything like mine, he may have to do only an hour or so of awake time till 5/6 months! It was crazy!

I don't remember for my first two but my third at just six months yesterday has been doing 45 minute naps for a couple weeks now. She used to do two three hour, and one one hour naps.
Miss it.

@Adira: yes! I miss that sleeping all the time! It gave me time to focus on the toddler! Now the naps require rocking and are short and I can tell the toddler is more affected than before.

@SweetiePie: I'm crazy about avoiding over tiredness, since my first was was overtired. I usually put him down after an hour. I have indeed tried 1hr 15mins this week because he falls asleep more readily, but maybe I need to go back to 1hr! Thank you!

My first did it from 3.5m until 5.5m. 30 minutes on the button!

My second started doing it around 3 months and it lasted until 8 months! 30-40 minutes always! He turned out to be a phenomenal napper though :)

Hmm... from what I remember, the first couple weeks they basically sleep all the time except when eating or pooping, right? I feel like it was pretty soon after that that they started doing their cat naps (25-40 minute naps), which continued until around 7-9 months.

Hmmm that seems to be opposite of what I tend to hear. That they start out with short catnaps and then eventually consolidate into longer 2-3 hour naps.
It might just be developmental, the baby is becoming more aware and alert and it's harder to fall and stay asleep. Maybe check out the wonder weeks app and see if it's a leap week and what the signs might be?

IT also could be overtiredness. Have you increased the awake time recently? (I.e. How long the baby is awake between naps)? At that age my son still couldn't go much more than an hour awake.

My advice would be to keep things consistent and keep doing what you've been doing. That is, if nothing else has changed and it's likely a developmental milestone or "regression". I found with my son that when he had sleep disruptions as long as I kept the routine and all other factors the same, he eventually went back to his nice, long naps. Usually after a couple of weeks.

If you have increased wake time, or changed anything else in the routine, I'd try to revert back and see if it helps. Good luck!
