Emotionally probably 3-4 weeks. Physically (things like hot flashes and dizziness) closer to 3 months. I felt more or less completely back up normal around 6 months.

I honestly didn't feel better until about 10 months post partum, about a month or so after I stopped nursing. The first year with the first baby is really hard, but it does get better and there are so many wonderful moments in between.

Ugh, I was such a mess. I remember DH called my SIL and asked when she felt normal again after having her kids. She told him a year (kidding) and I think he considered leaving me in a puddle of tears.

I think I evened out sort of gradually. I agree with @smurfette on the sleep though. Makes a huge difference. Everything is so overwhelming at first. You'll feel more on-top of things every day. Good luck!

@revel, it made a HUGE difference for me. I went super slow on the elliptical for 20-30 minutes every day, but it was SOMETHING. And then at 6 weeks pp, i started barre classes and after 3 weeks of that, I am feeling really good and ready to go back to crossfit. If anything, it's just good for my mental well being. I feel more ready to tackle the day after I've broken a sweat! I know you cf, too, so you're probably the same way :)

I am at a year PP and I think it never really went back to normal. Although I am not as weepy as those first few weeks.

I am 8 weeks pp and found my hormones evened out around 6 weeks. That's when I stopped crying for no reason! Now I have my moments but feel almost back to normal!

@photojane: that's kind of how I feel partway through week two, so perhaps I'll feel more balanced in a couple of days.

@blackbird: I MISS exercise! I'm trying to get outside every day, and can walk farther now that I'm not really in any pain from delivery, so maybe that will help a little.

I would say by 3 weeks pp my hormones were back to normal. No more daily random crying and I started to feel more in control of myself. Hang in there!! It was definitely one of the toughest things I've ever gone through.

@Revel: It probably was more sleep related but I would just start crying for no reason, at least once a week.

i felt a LOT more normal by week 2--i wasn't weepy except for the first week when the baby was in the hospital, but I did feel very dazed in general--i just didn't feel 'right'. by week 4, I really felt like myself again. Which also coincides with when I got on the elliptical and got moving. All that sitting around wasn't good for my mood!

There was a huge difference for me between weeks 2 and 3, but I didn't feel like I was out of the baby blues stage until maybe week 4 or 5. The first two weeks were insane for me. I cried A LOT & felt totally out of control of my thoughts and emotions. It was really bizarre. By week 3 I was still weepy and moody, but I could control myself. By week 5, I felt like myself... though, I'm still prone to crying at basically anything, but that's just part of being a mom!

@Smurfette: Ack, 2 months?!? Not the answer I was looking for, haha. Thanks for responding. I can see how sleep and balanced emotions would go hand in hand though.

Two months maybe. Course that was when we started getting more sleep too. I think my last major crying breakdown was 6 weeks.

I'm 10 days PP and still feeling super up and down, weepy, etc. Some of it is just the challenges of a newborn, but I can tell hormones are playing a role.

For those who have been through it, when did you start to feel a little more on top of your emotions?
