Around 6 weeks I'd say. It's actually common to have an oversupply for the first 6 weeks or so. Try your best not to pump if you are engorged (unless you are building a freezer stash or if your breasts are too engorged for baby to latch well) because it creates the vicious cycle of your body producing more milk. Congrats!!

@creativemomma15: oh I know, it seems like 5 weeks of learning to feed, agony of sore nips etc will be foreeeverr away. before you know it, somehow time has passed!

I'm 13 weeks, and LO went to bed at 930 - I pumped at 1130 just to empty breasts and she slept through the night. I woke up at 730am in AGONY with lumpy stretched taut sore boobies. I pumped lefty to release the pressure and filled a 150ml bottle, and put baby on righty - poor thing was trying to drink from a fire hydrant haha

The initial engorgement pain was so much worse for my second- I was in so much pain! I ended up needing to only feed one side at a time, in the early days I would do one side for a couple of hours before switching, because I had a bit of an oversupply and it was giving the baby upset stomachs only getting fore milk. Even now at ten weeks I only nurse one side. With my older daughter I always did both sides but I guess it's common to have more milk with second + kids.

It took about 2 weeks for the uncomfortable engorgement to calm down. I'm sure my supply wasn't totally regulated then it that's when I felt more comfortable. In the meantime hand expressing just a little helped, as did ice packs in my tank top, and ibuprofen (which I was taking for all kinds of post birth soreness).

@Kemma: I did try that now this last time and that helped some!

@LindsayLou: Yea, I don't tend to leak much from the other side so I still feel engorged. I hate to pump and extend the discomfort but it is hard to sleep and be so uncomfortable!

@FannyMae: 5-6 weeks seems so far away! Lol!

@catomd00: Ah, 12 weeks! I hope some of my pain goes away before then!

Definitely 5-6 weeks. no more agony engorgement all the time - just during the night when longer sleeps were happening.

About 6 weeks I think. It was pretty all over the place until then. I didn't pump, but I did leak a ton from the opposite side while nursing, so that helped the engorgement.

Could you try hand expressing just to relieve the engorgement?

I'm only 5-6 days in so I know not to expect a lot but when did your supply regulate some? I don't remember with DS & DD1! I'm having a hard time getting DD2 to nurse from both sides all the time and then I'm left feeling full on the side she didn't nurse from. Would you pump to help with comfort? But then wouldn't that just keep your supply up? I feel like I'm so new at this again! :silly:
