My son is 3.5 and still needs his nap or he turns into a beast. I can always tell the days he didn't nap at daycare. We usually have him nap on the weekends too unless we are out and about. I like @Mrs. High Heels: 's idea about quiet time in the bed though.

I thought Noelle was going to drop her nap around the 3 year mark because there was about a week of her fighting naps, but now at 3.5 she is still taking a 2-3 hour nap in the afternoons! She still really needs her nap.

But during the nap fighting phases, we enlist quiet time as well. We just tell her she can do whatever she wants as long as she stays within the confines of her bed, and that worked well. She usually had some books and toys in bed with her, and sometimes she would fall asleep mid-play. Hehe.

Still not for good at 2.5 but she only naps a few days a week.

I just deal with it and we play and read more when she is done with singing/playing in her crib.

Charlie still naps on the weekends pretty regularly and he's 4 1/2. But we stay out late on Saturdays so he really needs that nap.

Usually I run errands with Charlie while Olive is napping like going to the market, or he draws. We don't make him do quiet time because we're often out all day and they nap in the stroller.

ditto @Andrea:

After an hour if they didn't fall asleep I would go get them!

@Rubies: she stays in her room alone for at least an hour doing quiet activities like reading, arts and crafts, pretend play etc. No electronics.

Nap time should be replaced with quiet time so they still get a chance to rest their bodies. My 4 year old no longer naps, but quiet time does wonders. I notice a difference when we are out of the house and she doesn't have it.

...And what did you do during the times they clearly needed a nap but wouldn't?

My daughter is two months away from turning 3 years old and is really starting to fight her nap, which would be fine if she didn't melt down into a puddle of crazy every single time.

Yeesh.
