Opposite problem over here. Can't get Miss 3.5 to eat in the morning! I will try for hours and the give up. She gets hungry at like 10:30 and then I don't even know what meal to give her. She's been happy to wait since our bottle days ended.

He doesn't whine, and he is fine watching a show while I get it ready....but if I don't get it ready fast enough, I sure hear about it. lol

My DS is 13 months. When we pick him up out of the crib he is fine, but completely loses it once we put him on the changing table to change his diaper until the time that he nurses. Then after that, he loses it again in the few minutes it takes me to get his breakfast together. When will it end?!?

@SweetiePie: S is not really into eating (outside daycare) but he is a slave to his routine. He knows breakfast is right after when he gets changed and he knows dinner is when he gets home so he runs into the kitchen whining and screaming for his meal but then will pick at his food! The waffle/pancake thing totally happens even though he only ends up eating a few bites after its cooked. He runs to the freezer drawer and starts yelling. Lately we have found he will actually eat better if he we give him the pancake or waffle just frozen right away - for some reason he eats it no problem! Weirdo.

I guess we never really had tha a after she weaned- up until she weaned at 19 months she needed to nurse immediately (well, and I needed to lay back down in bed immediately). But breakfast has always been a while after she wakes up and she's never had an issue with it. It's actually only just recently at 2.5 years she has started asking for it a little early. She wakes up around 7, used to eat at 8 but lately by 7:30 she's been asking for Cheerios and raisins. (Dry, every day.). But dinner has been a little earlier too since she's been prone to total meltdowns in the evening.

My LO is 19 months and in the last month or two I've noticed he doesn't want to eat or drink right away. He used to want milk immediately, but now he will play or hang out for a half hour or hour before asking for milk. He doesn't eat a lot of breakfast.

Mine has never needed to eat right when she wakes up in the morning. Actually, she will eat horribly if I try to feed her. This morning, it was almost 2 hours after she woke up before she decided she was hungry. DD is 9 months old.

@winniebee: @SweetiePie: we have the same exact thing going on with the toaster/frozen waffle meltdowns. we taught DS the word "wait" on Saturday and that seemed to help a little yesterday (he screamed "I WAIT" instead of crying which I guess is a net win).

Not sure... Probably around 2. He is 2.5 and he'll ask for milk right away most mornings, but we can usually get him dressed and downstairs before he eats his breakfast and drinks milk.

Yeah, I think this is somewhat of a personally thing. I don't think DS has done this since he was an infant. Usually in the morning I have to push and prod to get him to go downstairs and eat. And sometimes I ask him if he wants breakfast and he says, "No, play".

I think it might be more of a personality thing than an age thing. Mine is 18 months and has never needed to eat breakfast as soon as he wakes. He wakes around 6:30, we get him at 7 and he doesn't eat until 8. We've been doing this as long as we've been doing "real" food. So a year?
ETA: and we still totally get the whining while the Frozen waffle is being toasted. As soon as I open the freezer for it he is crying because it is not in his hands NOW! Putting it in the toaster is a fall-on-the-floor-dramatically tantrum.

Mine is 7.5 months and doesn't care to nurse when he wakes up. I try to make him (trying to nurse more during the day to eliminate MOTN wake ups. Not working) but he has no interest. We are doing BLW so for breakfast he'll have a bite or two of eggs or oatmeal but most ends up on the floor. Usually about an hour after he is up he'll want to nurse. I'm not sure if this will change with age.

Mmm, not yet over here at 23 months. In fact, she is more impatient now than ever. She wants to cuddle to wake up, but the second she's really awake, it's "paci sink" (put my paci in the sink) and "eat hungry!" until we get our butts up and moving.

I think it really depends on the child. Both of my sisters needed to eat right away as small children, whereas I always had to wait a while. My daughter apparently takes after me and has never wanted to eat immediately upon waking (since beginning solid foods). She will be 2 in May.

R is 15m and has to eat within minutes of waking. He runs to the fridge and whines at the door until I get breakfast in front of him. He fusses the entire time a frozen waffle is cooking (approximately 1 minute). My older son is totally out of this phase and can wait an hour or more before eating int he morning. I can't remember when the MUST EAT when opening eyes phase ends. Age 2?
