18 months is when it started to get tough. She's always been a sweet, laid back kid but from about 18 months on, she would scream (not cry, but a high pitched, wailing scream) if she was in her car seat for a second longer than she wanted, or if I couldn't anticipate her needs fast enough (I guess telepathy doesn't work!!).

It was so hard for about a year... Like I couldn't wait for my husband to get home each day (I'm a sahm) and some days I would go straight into my room when he got home, turn off the lights, and lie in bed for an hour, just trying to process the day.

I don't know when, but it just got better at one moment. It's almost like she did a 180 one day. I would say it was the end of summer? Maybe when she was 2.5 years old. And now , at just a month shy of 3, she is a DREAM. strangers regularly comment that they haven't seen such a well behaved child. She never tantrums (unless she's sick or super tired), listens super well, and is generally such a pleasant little person.

I would attribute most of the change to her finally having a word explosion. She's been a little late, verbally, and it wasn't until she wS 2,5 years old that she began to really communicate using sentences and we could truly understand her. I think she was very frustrated until then and it showed in how she acted out.

Currently my DD is 2.5 and she is the worst she has ever been. She has been getting progressively worse. Temper tantrums when tired and can't go to bed cuz we are out. More when we are home and I put her to bed. Again if she doesn't get cheese. Again if she doesn't want a certain movie in. I can't win! She just pooped her diaper, took it off and threw it on the floor. Amidst waiting for me to get in there after dealing with brother she peed all over her bedding, pillows, stuffed animals... Everything. *sigh*

Around 26 months when we brought little brother home. It was steadily rough (ok, the absolute pits) until 6 weeks before he turned 3. He has become so much fun to be around the past couple months! He's easier to communicate with, listens, and has become sooooo cuddly!

Oh gosh, I hope this is the turn. I have an almost 18 month old, and she's so trying lately. Almost exactly like what @Anagram: says. Just so much whining and tantrum-ing, and no ability to communicate which is frustrating.

He is almost 35 months (will turn three next month), and we haven't dealt with any terrible twos. Sure, he's a toddler and has his moments, but overall the two's have been so fun and enjoyable. He's a pretty good listener, sensitive (especially to our instruction), and sweet.

Everyone I've talked to said the three's were awful. We'll see!

We had a taste of it around 16-18 months, and then when she turned 2 it was a switch, and she is the stereotypical terrible two behavior. Right now at 27 1/2 months she's sort of a monster ;) I think half of that has to do with a new baby on the way rocking her world, but it's been rough. I know they say 3 is worse, but most articles I'm reading about "threeanger" my LO is doing now.

Yikes! LO is 20 months and is super easy/agreeable, other than when we were on vacation for 10 days (at 19 months) when she was a horribly tantrumy nightmare. I assume now it was discomfort/new surroundings/exhaustion..

LO *just* started tantrumming this week. And now it's non stop tantrums for every little thing--mainly because she's frustrated she can't figure something out--like, can't fit a puzzle piece into the wooden puzze? Tantrum. Can't reach her leg high enough to climb onto a kitchen chair? Tantrum. Can figure out how to connect a wierd corner dublo to the tower she's building? tantrum.

I think it's just frustration about not being able to verbalize what she needs help doing, and not being able to do it herself, either.

@loveisstrange: I would fully agree with this.

Since he's turned 2, he's gotten progressively better. Don't get me wrong, he still has moments every day, but he's getting far better at communicating and understand when I say no, it means no. We've also gotten better at learning what sets him off. If we give him a warning that this is the last time we play with a puzzle before we have to go up for bath, he will put it back together, then put it away, and say, "Time for bath!"

18-24 months was hard. So many tears/non-stop whining. I feel like he turned at 2 and became so much easier! I assume it's related to being able to communicate better.

BUT I have to add that we are nearing 2.5 and I'm suddenly noticing a lot more attitude. Not tantrums really but he's certainly got some very strong opinions all the sudden.

Right after 2 years old for sure. Lately at 2.5 years old, he's been especially whiny and opinionated about everything. Bribing him with donut holes to go to the car and the school have gotten me through the morning more than I would like to admit.

Dylan is going to be be two officially (adjusted since he's a preemie) this weekend. I have to admit that so far, he has been a dream child (minus the 5 month NICU stay and reflux and feeding issues of the first year). He's pretty agreeable, redirects well when he doesn't get his way. He doesn't really tantrum. He cuddles. He's a pretty happy kid. I keep reading that 2 1/2 is the time when it all goes crazy.

So what were the "Terrible Twos" like for you? When did they start? Did anyone avoid them completely?
