I took two solo trips w/LO - once when she was 9 months, and then again when she was 14 months. 9 months was relatively easy - she was crawling but not super mobile so I didn't have to chase after her or anything. I wore her most of the time to keep my hands free. We flew internationally, and it was really a piece of cake.

14 months was muuuuch harder. She was running around everywhere so it was really hard chasing her around. She wasn't content to just sit on my lap anymore. I didn't enjoy that trip as much, just b/c it was so stressful trying to keep her under control.

I did a solo trip up to my parents with LO at 20 months old or so. I didn't realize he was sick, but the ride up was easy. I picked him up around nap time, so he could sleep in the car. He slept a little too well for him. It snowballed into him being sick with a double ear infection. The way back was a little tougher because it was post nap, but we had fun and survived.

When I got home, I let him run around a bit in the house, did bedtime routine, and ordered takeout sushi for myself.

I did a solo cross-country trip with DD to see my parents just before she turned 6 months. I wouldn't say I was "confident" but it worked out just fine. The hardest part was figuring out how to eat/drink something while holding her on my lap in those tiny airplane seats -- if I was doing it again, I'd definitely pack lots of energy bars! But really, packing light (for the carry-in at least), having things well-organized, and staying calm so LO didn't sense my anxiety were key.

If you are driving, I wouldn't hesitate to do this. I would, however, consider renting a house rather than staying in a hotel. With that many babes, a hotel might be really difficult and we have always preferred renting a house when we travel with DD.

Flying is a whole different monster.. I would have been fine traveling with DD alone before she was mobile... now it takes both of us to wrangle her on flights.

I started taking DD on four hour each way trips (alone)s at 7 weeks! She was great until 12 weeks, when she decided she hates the car. We've taken 14 4 hour trips together, and she now (at almost 6 months) plays until she gets bored then falls asleep!

@illumina: I've taken DS to see my family (5 hours each away, multiple times. Its fine, plan to stop a lot and have the drive take forever. DS has a melting down point around 4 hours that makes the last couple suck but what cha' gonna do.

I leave tomorrow to see other family 7-8 hours away so I can report back on that next week. We're leaving at 5 so that hopefully he'll be asleep for most of the drive.

I did a 2 hour road trip with L when he was 2 months old.
I did a 1 hour flight with L when he was 11 months old.

I've never worried about driving trips, I'm a confident driver and our highways are really nice and I never go farther than 2 - 3 hours away.

Flying was definitely an experience and I feel very very lucky that the people who sat next to us on the plane were SO patient and understanding and even interactive with L. I've heard horror stories and was so so worried. In the end it wasn't as bad as I expected, especially seeing as how I haven't much flown by myself either.

We did drive 8 hours last summer to visit my parents when L was 2 months old. Granted I had DH with me, but the drive went fine and we planned most driving during naps. Stayed in a motel at the 4 hour point and was on the road again the next day. I had to stop quite often for feedings, which was a pain, but if L would have been older we would have just drove without stopping.

Good Luck! You'll do great.

At 22 months, I've never done over an hour road trip by myself, it scares me! she needs to be entertained, easier with 2 people in the car, one can sit in the back with her.

I did 6 hours in the road solo at 3 months. It went well so I did a 4 hour trip two weeks later. We did several road trips thereafter. Flying we did at 16 months, I was also 35 weeks pregnant and that was our first solo trip.

I did a 4-5 hour drive with LO when she was 9 months and again around 11 months. She was (is) on 2 naps, so we left before morning nap, stopped when she woke up and BF, got back in the car, stopped for solids lunch (for both of us) when she got fussy again. It went OK, definitely worked best to wait as long as possible for the first stop, then let her out of the car seat for a while to stretch, play, and generally not be in the car seat. For us, it would be harder on one nap, but I am sure we will do it then too. We also did not stay in a hotel, we stayed with family. You can do it! Just be prepared for a 7 hour drive to take 9 hours with stops, and time it so she will nap at least part of it.

I did a plane trip when my son was 8 months old, it was mostly coordination, but the flight was short enough that if it was a disaster, it would be over soon!

I took DD on a 6 hr plane ride at 10 weeks. I have taken her on two other plane trips since and a few car rides (about 4 hours). It wasn't too big of a deal. She was younger than your LO, so I don't know if it was easier.

I've traveled by plane with DS a few times solo before he was 1 and recently took a very long road trip with him. Like @Weagle said, he does great in the car/car seat in general so it wasn't a big deal. He let us know when he was hungry and needed to stretch so I'd stop to feed and stretch then continue onwards. Normally, he just wanted a snack so I'd give him something to eat and continue driving for another 2 hours before he really needed to get out.

I did a 6 hour road trip with LO right after she was two. I never had any reason to drive alone with her instead of fly before then. I think I could have done it much earlier though. At 13 months, LO was still taking two naps, so we would have left at nap 1, stopped when she woke and got fussy to eat and play, then keep going for nap two. It wouldn't be ideal, but definitely doable.

I'm tentatively planning a road trip to see one of my best friends, who has just had her 3rd child last month, one of my cousins who recently had a baby and another cousin who is due to give birth end of September. They all live within an hours drive of each other, but the drive from my home would be around 7 hours. I imagine we'd be gone for a week or just under and stay in a hotel(s). DH has taken way to much annual leave already, so it'd just be LO and I.

If we go in October, LO will be 13 months. Is this a bad time? DH, LO & I travel together all the time, but the thought of taking LO on my own is terrifying!
