We bought him a Kindle (the kids' Amazon one), at 2, and we let him use it every couple of days, or when I'm cooking something that's dangerous for him to be around. I'll also use it when I want to shower. Both have known how to work them since 6 months old. We had an iPad he previously used, but doesn't work so well because of its age. With both devices he had the same rules, it wasn't a free for all.
