I play the hotdog song from Mickey mouse clubhouse and that distracts him for at least 15 seconds so I can start the change... if its a bad stinky diaper- I just give him my phone in hopes that he will stay still so I can at least get a couple wipes in!

The only thing lately that works for us is R plays with the nose frieda. I don't know why, but she holds each part in each hand. I take off the little part with the filter. But the other two pieces seem to satisfy her for now and for the time for a quick change.

Usually still bad here at 15 months...I do fine that warning him it's going to happen helps. Like, i'll say "First we're going to change your diaper, and then we're going to read a book" and I'll say that a few times. He seems to get that if he sits still thru a diaper change he gets something fun afterwards. This only started working recently though and only works sometimes.

Letting him play with my phone works sometimes too, although sometimes he gets mad and throws it.

Singing a song about how stinky his poop is helps sometimes too, lol. Especially if I make exaggerated faces and say "P U! So stinky!" and wave my hand in front of my face.

DS is 18 months and we enjoyed the "golden age" last week where he willingly laid down for us when we asked him to. DS started resisting diaper changes much later than most - like probably past a year old, and then he had a couple of months where he would twist and turn or cry whenever we changed his diaper. Recently, it has gotten a lot better. We give him warning, but I think what has helped was asking him where he wanted his diaper changed - couch, or the floor, and helping us to get a diaper. He got to choose. Then, after his choice, we would put him there and when he would protest slightly, we just acknowledged his feelings regarding diaper changes and he would listen to us talk and sometimes help us out. It has made a big difference, cuz I know I dreaded changing his diaper, to the point where he actually got diaper rash because I avoided it! LOL. Also, I think since he got diaper rash and he figured out his penis hurt when we didn't change it often enough, maybe he has been more willing? I would tell him how sorry I was that it hurt and tell him that was why we needed to change his diaper more often.

@Mrs. Blue: Sesame Street on my phone has been helpful. We're at an age where LO needs us to understand him. So, I ask him questions like are you thirsty, are you hungry, are you sleepy, do you like the snow you see out of the window? Basically, doing a dialogue or a narration of what we're doing helps. It takes a few techniques to get through them.

This might be the most discouraging thread ever... :crying:

I'm going to attempt @mrbee: @Mrs Green Grass: standing recommendations and also give in and let them play with my phone during diaper changes only. If that fails, I'm going to just let them run around naked in the yard all day and pray they'll be potty trained early. :silly:

still terrible at 18mo over here! i find having a legit changing table helps just because there is only so far he can go. i almost always give him his binky beforehand and lately he's somewhat distracted/entertained if i smell his feet in a really silly way and tel l him how stinky they are (such a BOY!!) or if we play peek a boo with a burp cloth.

@Mrs. Blue: If it's especially dirty, then I just do the change in the bath tub and use a little water and soap to clean up. The kids love playing with the water out of the faucet anyway, so it helps on that front too!

@lovehoneybee: It can be the most frustrating part of my day, for sure. I try to hold him down with my legs but he is like Houdini and can slip right back out in seconds. Poopy diapers usually require letting him hold the remote or a phone if I want any chance of not having his hands covered as well. Yuck.

@bushelandapeck: And I feel so bad because sometimes I have to legit hold his lower body down, or there will be poop smeared everywhere! Lately he has this new game where when I'm trying to fasten the diaper he'll arch his back and thrust himself backwards (upwards). He thinks it's hilarious. But in the meantime, I need both hands to fasten his diaper, especially right before bed when I want it to be really secure. So frustrating!

I give him toys that he only gets during diaper changes and that works most of the time. Usually gives me at least 30 seconds before he starts wiggling around, then I just quickly give him a different toy and that gives me a little more time. A few times I've made unique noises like squeaks or loud animal sounds just to get his attention and he'll stop and stare at me like I'm nuts and that gives me another 10 seconds or so. :) Hey, whatever works! Just keep trying new things. That's what I do.

Still a bit of a struggle at 17 months old. I've found having a Sesame Street playlist and toddler keys really help with them. The standing idea works well especially at the age we're at. We do that before baths. I need to use it for morning and bedtime changes.

I was hoping for good news when I opened this thread : (. I do standing most of the time. If only I could master putting in on when he's on all fours... I wrote a blog post about it titled "professional animal wrangler" - that's seriously what it feels like.

@Mrs. Blue: I do standing for the putting on part, not getting off. I can usually get him to stay put for at least 1 wipe. I try to get his legs bent as quick as possible to keep him on his back. (But as soon as I pull wipes out, he's off rolling to explore the wipes container...)

@pinkcupcake: Oh, gah, yes, the standing has added a whole new dimension of suckiness, but at least mine can't run away yet. @mrbee: I've never considered letting them stand as a way to get the diaper changed. Without being tooooo gross, how does this work on dirty diapers?? I feel like somehow it would result in a big mess.
