My son is 5 and knows that you need money to buy things, but he doesn't quite grasp value. He still makes the classic mistake with coins, picking the nickel because it's bigger than the dime, even though he knows that 10 comes after 5.

DS is 3.5 and understands the basics about how we need money to pay for things. We've actively taken him to the bank for deposits into his savings account. We talk about saving, not always having money to buy things, etc. We talk about buying things that we need vs what we want, etc. He has a piggy bank in his room too that he actively monitors and (adds to when he "earns" money.)

We talk about how DH and I work to make money and pay for things that we need like our house, food, clothes, etc.

In our local district, kids are taught to recognize coins in kindergarten. Values of coins on Gr.1, and so on.

Gifted Grade 8s learn about the stock market and budgeting.

I'd imagine that the concept of money/exchange/trade can be taught in Pre-K.

This site provides age appropriate discussion points to talk about money.

I think you're talking about the right things, it just may take a few times for it to actually click?

In Texas, they start teaching financial literacy in Pre-K. It begins with identifying wants/needs--and I think that is a good place to start! At home though, we talk about coins and how to earn money, etc, which is a little more basic than wants and needs at this point.

DD1 is almost 4 and is starting to get it. Except when we ask your do you have money when she wants to buy something. She will say "daddy has money!". LOL

We've also given her a chore of turning the dining area light on and setting the napkins on the table every night for dinner. That's her job and she gets a quarter a week. :P I think that has definitely help!

That things cost money, people earn money, the value of money, etc...

I tried to explain to my 3.5 year old that we can't buy everything because things cost money, and that we have to earn money to get the things we want. It went in one ear and out the other. Is there a good way to explain this to a younger kid or is it best to just wait until they are older to try and explain it?
