We have a side by side double stroller for our LOs (22 months apart). I have bo idea how we'd go on longer excursions or walks without it.

@anandam: by "straight to a double" do you mean a stroller like the City Slect (where it can be used as a single or a double)?

We have 2 LOs, 22 months apart and I intially thought I'd want the flexibility of the City Select, but I didn't like it at all when I put LO1 in the seat. The seat didn't seem like it would work for bigger/taller toddlers for long. We ended up getting a side by stroller and sometimes we use it and sometimes we use the single stroller for LO2 and LO1 walks.

@kiddosc: Haha oh dear.

Thanks everyone! We haven't got one yet (DS is 7 months) but are trying to figure out whether to go straight for a double when we get one since we expect to have a #2 in te next few years. Helps to have some perspective on how long #1 will need it.

At 2.5 my older daughter rides in the stroller about 50% of the time, rides the buggy board maybe 30%, and walks 20%. She gets distracted and slows down pretty quickly so I don't like to have her walk far.

At almost two she's good walking for about 20 minutes but here distracted easily. If it's a short trip and no rush we leave the stroller. If there is prolonged walking or an overlap with nap time we bring the stroller.

My 3.5 year old can walk 1 mile happily and 2 miles with a lot of encouragement. I still need a stroller or at least buggy board most days.

Mine is 3, and she can go a couple of miles walking. Around the zoo, etc. She can scoot for 4 miles or so, which is amazing, so we don't use the stroller any more. If we lived in a really big city, and were walking everywhere, we might still use it.

Depends on the kid and the situation. Mine is 2.5 and we still use it any time we're going to be walking around for a long time.

I think she was like 18/20 months before we could go without for short times.

He's two and in the city, it's crucial. He likes to walk but it would take me a billion years to run errands or get anywhere if I just let him walk!

We didn't use it much at all, I babywore LO1 most of the time, but, ever try going anywhere with a 2 year old and a baby? Having a double stroller is the ONLY way I can go places alone with more than a few mins of walking, with my 2 LOs who are 22 months apart. I noticed my 2.5 year old is pretty much too tall for it when we went to the zoo the other day, so even though I would use it for longer, I won't be able to for very long. :bummed:

We live in a suburbs of sorts, with LO at 2 years old, we only use it for when we will be constantly walking for more than 20-30 minutes. She doesn't mind it but it turns into in out/in out and I prefer to only take it when we think she will get tired like the zoo or sightseeing. I won't be getting a double stroller for this reason.

We keep a cheap umbrella stroller in the car for errands but at 26 months, Miss A is usually quite happy to walk. We stopped taking our big pram (Mountain Buggy) out at around 18 months but still use it for dog walking or if we're going to spend all day away from the car (it's much easier to push and we can keep all LO's stuff in the basket).

we live the in the suburbs and LO, at almost 2, is using the stroller less and less. if we're taking long walks we bring it and he will usually ride in it for a little, but at this point he wants to walk more and also we need him to burn energy.

We live in the burbs, and LO is 2. He has pretty much outgrown the stroller. He will still get in it to go for a run with us, but he would rather ride in the grocery cart or walk. If it's just one of us...that usually means he's confined to the cart. If it's both of us, one runs around with him while the other does the shopping :happy:

I think it depends on lifestyle too. We live in a city in a central location with no car. So normal for us is probably quite different for suburbanites. My son is almost 4 and he can walk maybe 20-30min for errands, or going to a place without too many complaints, but he's slow and I feel like I'm dragging him sometimes. He hasn't regularly ridden in the stroller since DD arrived last year, but we have the wheel board for the stroller so he still gets to ride a lot. I know a few other parents with kids my son's age who don't have strollers anymore and I know they still end up carrying their kids or using a scooter or something like that. For outings like the zoo or going to a park he can definitely walk longer since the trip is broken up with activities.

Not like height/weight limits from the manufacturer, but more like, when can they walk well enough for long enough that you just don't need it any more (for routine errands or park visits, etc)? Or when do they prefer to walk?
