@Little Misters Mom: aw, that is so sweet.

Our eldest is 10 and he asked me to stop reading to him about a year or so ago. He is a fantastic reader and loves reading anything (He's in the middle of the 5th Harry Potter). He did say to me the other day "S, do you remember when you used to read to me? You were so good at it". I'm not sure if he was asking me to maybe read to him again? Maybe I will try.

Our middle boy, 7, has never had the patience to sit and listen, he's too busy. So we stopped with him probably far sooner than we should have.

I read to L every day, multiple times, and I don't ever want to stop. ;)

Reading teacher's perspective here: it is important to read to your child well after they can read on their own. It helps them to have a model of what fluent reading sounds like. It also allows you to model your reading strategies. For example, stopping to wonder about what the author is getting at or stopping to make predictions.... :)

@cmomma17: @IRunForFun: @Mrs. Lion: @birdofafeather: @mrsjazz: @travellingbee: Love all The Hobbit fans. It makes me excited for baby boy to be old enough to pass that tradition on. Now that I'm a parent the idea of my dad reading in the hospital is equal parts sweet and sad to me because I realize how scared and helpless they must have felt and somehow reverting to the days when a story made things better was all he could think to do.

My eldest is in first grade and has been reading pretty independently since kindergarten. We usually still sit in the kids' room when she reads at night for any words she has trouble with. Occasionally she will still ask me to read to her though, and she follows along silently. And we read to the younger ones too, also at bedtime.

I was in 5th (I read on my own too) but my school had a reward program to encourage parents to read to their child and the child to read to the parent for 30 minutes each night.

My parents read to me until I was in my middle years of elementary school. I honestly still love listening to a story, thank you audiobooks!

As a teacher, I read aloud to high school students from time to time and I am always amazed at how they visibly relax. Although I suppose having your parents read to you before bed when your in high school would be a little odd ha ha! I think the reason for stopping would be a combination of children's age and the fact that life just gets busier sadly. I think maybe we do it in different ways once they are older though. Like reading a snippet of a news story out loud and then talking about it.

As for my little ones, I will continue as long as they will listen :)

I was about 7 or 8 when my parents and I stopped snuggling up to read together. Reading together wasn't always them reading to me, I would sometimes read them books or we would switch off.

@Skadi: yes!

My dad read to us our whole lives. He still reads aloud a lot with my mom and sister (who has an intellectual disorder and lives with them). I admit some nights as a middle/high schooler I was bored with it and would rather have been chatting on AIM with my friends, but it was great family time and we always had something to discuss. My husband isn't much of a reader so I don't know if we will be able to go the distance as a family, but in my ideal world we would.

We plan to read to them until they move out. :silly: My DH and I already read aloud to each other, so we'll just transition from children's books to books the whole family can enjoy once they're a bit older. We know several families that have done this, and the (now grown) children all said that they really enjoyed that time together.

It really did used to be the norm before the advent of television. And since we only watch television occasionally in our house, I think it's a great way to relax and enjoy a story together as a family.

I have friends whose families did this until they were in their late teens -- and still do when they get together for holidays! just thinking about it makes me happy :)

@Little Misters Mom: That sounds so sweet!

I plan on reading to LO as long as she'll let me. I am planning on a mother-daughter book club since I'm an avid reader where we'll read the same book and talk about it afterwards. On evenings we discuss the book, it would be our special "date" night.

I read this story a couple of years ago and it really stuck with me:

My husband's family read together well into the middle school years. The most I have experience with is with since families I have nannied for I have continued reading to kids through fifth grade. When I was teaching the fifth and sixth graders loved being read to- certainly part of it is they thought they were getting out of "real work" but frankly they got more out of it and it facilitated some great discussions.

@mrbee: I would love to keep reading as a family through middle school if possible, but in this age of technology we shall see! I have a 12 year old stepdaughter and 12 is so shockingly different from 11!
Most of my memories of parents reading to me were in elementary school. However, my mom was a librarian so I was surrounded by books even if they weren't being read aloud to me.

A lot of parents stop when kids start reading themselves, but the benefits to reading to your kids continue long after thay can read! I will read to lo as long as he will let me :) reasonably, probably 2nd or 3rd grade. Then i hope we will be able to choose books to read together, book club style :) discussing books is good for kids forever!
