I used motherlove nipple cream and had to use a shield with 1 nipple because it was more tender than the other and I would cry every time he latched. For me it took 8-9 weeks, but I had severe nipple trauma, so that's not the norm! I wish I had gotten some sooner. Honestly though, my nipples hurt for a long time. It got better each week, but the pain was still there until about 8 weeks pp. I'm 6 months in now, and love BF but the first couple of months were awful. LO is three weeks now and they're still a little bit sore but not super painful anymore. I used lanolin a couple of times but what really helped me was expressing some milk after each feed, rubbing it in and then letting them air dry.
