Oh how I feel for you! My LO is 3.5 weeks now, but he did that for about the two weeks. I feel pretty lucky now because he sleeps sooo well at night. He will sleep for 3-4 hour stretches, wake up to nurse and fall asleep nursing, with no crying involved. He still nurses every 2-2.5 hrs during the day. Those first two weeks though were rough, especially not knowing if/when it might improve. Not sure if it helped, but I would wake him in the morning and take him on a walk in the sunshine to try to help him differentiate night and day (supposedly they can't do this until 6 weeks, but he is very wakeful in the mornings now). Do you swaddle them at night? Do they break out? This was our problem and my pediatrician told me to double swaddle him (I leave in diaper only to prevent overheating, use miracle blanket first, then Aden+anais over that) From the very first night I tried this he started sleeping so much better! She said if they wake for whatever reason they often just want to nurse for comfort. Worked wonders for us.

Congrats on your twins! I can't Imagine doing this with two :)

@Shimmer: when they are little it made me nervous too. After awhile I learned where to keep my hands to hold on to them and I would knock out quickly. Nursing time was napping time :). Mine would usually fall asleep nursing so they would be asleep on the pillow. When they started to wake up and move around I woke up right away. So it worked out ok.

My LO was always great about going 4hrs+ at night from birth. She started sleeping 9hrs+ at night at 9 weeks. However, during the day she always efficiently but often. She's 3.5 months now and eats every 2.5-3 hours. And it has only been that way for about 3 weeks.

Healthy Sleep book says everything regulates after 6 weeks after the due date. (Being born early or late doesn't seem to change this).

@Coco Bee: Yup, we tandem nurse 99 % of the time. I'll give them individual "snacks" as they need them, though. And yes, we have them sleep together in the pack and play in our room. They love it!! It is so cute to watch them snuggle together.

@Oceanis723: I've been afraid to fall asleep while nursing! I use the My Breast Friend twin pillow to nurse so it's not like they can easily roll off and go anywhere... I guess it's just a fear right now. I'm so tired at night that I doze a bit sometimes. I need to get over this fear because mama needs to sleep!

All the pp are correct it varies but some where between a month and three it should calm down. My suggestion for the twins is to learn how to sleep while they are nursing as well. It helps a little. Used a double pillow and once I got them hooked on. Would fall back asleep. It was the only way I slept for awhile. Keep going momma you're doin good

I seem to be the minority but DD started eating every 4 hours at 2 weeks old. Our schedule was 10,2,6. That went on until she was 5 weeks and then she started getting 6 hour stretches. At 7 weeks she started sleeping through the night. There's hope!! It doesn't last for too long, don't worry :) I know twins are more difficult but hopefully they'll let momma sleep more soon!

It took about two and a half before she stopped cluster feeding. Around that same time, she also became really efficient and could finish each breast in about five minutes. Unfortunately, she's going through a six month growth spurt and is nursing nonstop...my nipples are in pain again.

That's so awesome you are nursing twins! Wow! :)

It took awhile. That whole first month I hardly got sleep unless dh was holding ds for me!!

Gosh I couldn't imagine doing it with twins!! You seriously are ah-mazing for nursing twins; you go girl!!

And hope your little sweeties give you a break soon :)

Two q's out of curiosity:
Do you nurse both at the same time so that they're on the same schedule?

Also, do you have them sleep together?

Hmmm, I think it was around 3 months that we got it down to 8 feedings a day, on a 7/10/2/5/7/10 during the day and 1-2 during the night? The feedings also got a lot shorter around that time, so we were done in more like 15 minutes instead of 30?

Go you for nursing twins!

About 6 weeks or so before LO started going for longer periods without a feed at night, but somewhat shorter periods between feeds during the day. She used to feed every 3 - 3.5 hrs or so around the clock (sometimes more frequently), but she's now going for 6 - 8 hours at night without a feed but feeding every 1.5 - 2 hrs during the day. She's 9 weeks now and has been doing this for the past two or three weeks.

My boys are 10 days old and we do major nursing sessions every 2-3 hours around the clock. If someone is fussy and seems to be hungry, we'll do a mini-session to top things off and move along with the day. At night, we're cluster feeding between the hours of 2-5 am for some reason :(

I'd love to know when the feedings start spacing out a bit - I would like to sleep a little more than 1.5-2 hours at a time relatively soon!
