I did ham, cheese, and lettuce sandwiches at a year old. I tore off bite-size pieces by hand.
I did pb&j sandwiches earlier than that, but substituted organic applesauce instead of jelly.

Kid 1 first had sandwiches around 18 months.

Kid 2 starting eating pb&j (cut in quarters) at 8
Months. Whoops. In retrospect it may have been a bit early but it was so nice to be able to make Them the same food for lunch :)

@travellingbee: it's funny because I don't eat sandwiches either so maybe it's genetic :silly:
He eats plenty of things he doesn't see me eat so I don't think it's learned.

My 18 month old eats bites from a sandwich just fine, so long as I am the one to hold it. If I give her the sandwich she just disassembles it, and won't really eat it.

@travellingbee: mostly peanut butter, but I have also done cream cheese. And she eats tacos- I spread a little Greek yogurt or sour cream on the tortilla first to help things stick, then ground meat, diced tomatoes, cheese... she's not really a fan of lunch meat.

Gosh I can't remember but I would say it was somewhere between 18-20 months? But he still won't really have any sandwich besides PB. I've tried turkey and salami and things like that and he just isn't interested.

I think 15 months is when she had her first sandwich (it was a turkey slidwr). I trust her more with taking bites then I do with little pieces. She will take a handful of little bites and shove them in her mouth, or keep adding more before swallowing.

@travellingbee: we do roll ups with shredded spinach, cream cheese, and lunch meat or shredded chicken. My bigger LO likes to dip them in salsa. We also do pb&j, tuna salad and shredded carrots, and scrambled eggs and cheese as roll ups.

I would give my 16 month old a sandwich but I know there would be a mess.

On the other hand we waited so long with my 4 year old she never did like lunch meat type sandwiches, only PB&J.

I give my 14 month old tortilla roll ups- it makes me laugh because she looks like such a big kid eating them. For bread sandwiches she just won't really eat them unless they are in squares but I would trust her if she would.

My older daughter wouldn't eat sandwiches at all until like 2.5.

Just this weekend I gave A (12.5mo) a grilled cheese sandwich just cut into triangles. She's been having PB&J like that for a couple of weeks. I wouldn't do like a turkey and cheese like that yet, though.

I have still been cutting my 13 months food up into small bites or french fry sized strips. I can't remember when it's OK to start giving them something like a sandwich that they take bites off of rather than precut. Anyone have any idea?
