I actually didn't put her in hard sole shoes until she was 20-21 months old. until then she wore flexible soles like see Kai run smaller.

I think she wore robeez once and had a hole in them! We switched pretty early for protection but I did quality shoes like SKR.

My dd still wears soft soles and she will be 2 next month. She hates hard soles and refuses to even stand up in them. She loves Livie and Luca shoes best.

Thank you all! He's only just turned 11 months, so I think we'll stick with the soft soles for a little longer. He seems to have pretty good traction with them. I try and do barefoot, but it is still so cold, so I think it is easier than socks!

They will probably be going outside to play a bit more in a few weeks when it is (finally) nice out, so I'll reevaluate.

We went from soft soled Robeez-style shoes to a rubber soled shoe (Stride Rite stage 2) when she started walking and we had to move up a size in shoes, so 12ish months. She is walking very well and starting to run, so we will move to hard soled shoes with the next size up.

We go to a kids shoe store in the area with very knowledgeable sales people. They recommended moving into a flexible (rubber soled) shoe when LO was pulling up. They said the soft soled shoes are harder for LO to learn to walk because they are slick and its easier for LO to slip while pulling up. LO2 just turned 12 months and people are shocked at how well she walks for her age. Not sure if the shoes helped or not, but the certainly didn't hinder her walking.

My LO still wears mostly soft-soled shoes at 19 months (she runs now!). She has much better control in softer soles, I've noticed.

Her daycare teacher also asked about harder soled shoes, but I told her I'm not doing them yet. She was surprised and said in her day, people thought kids learned to walk better in hard soles--but I've read a lot about it and while there's no clear science (there's more like two different camps of thought), it seems that softer soles allow kids to learn their natural gate first.

LO does have some harder soled shoes, like Stride Right mary janes--and she wears them if they match her outfit. But she runs around best in her SKR smaller and her Pediped originals.

12 months per the pedi's recommendation. DS learned to walk in hard soled shoes. I think it helped him.

We'll do soft shoes as long as she'll wear them, but for daycare, we have to have hard sole shoes for outside time. So, starting as soon as she walks. (which will neverrrr happen).

He started walking when he was in SKR Smaller shoes - flexible sole but not soft like Robeez. When we got his next shoes he was in SKR regular soled shoes (maybe 2 mos later?)

I got them once he was walking more than he was crawling. I was very keen for him to be able to walk at the park, and didn't feel comfortable with outdoor walking in soft soles. At home I still keep him in bare feet though as he seems much more stable.

We went on stages with my nanny kids, super soft like robeez until they were walking well and were maneuvering various types of terrain. Then a medium sole like See Kai Run. We started buying things like Nike tennis shoes for example, after they were proficient walkers and climbers in shoes, closer to two.

I think I'm skipping Robeez this time around - my 9 month old is working on walking and I have her in Pedipeds because she slides on our wood floors in Robeez. Skidders are also rubber but not really "hard soled" - my older DD wore these a lot from about 15 months on. I even have done for her to wear this summer and she's turning three. They're great playground shoes because they're machine washable.

My little man has been walking for about a month now, but recently really getting into it. I have had him in Robeez but his teacher just suggested him going into a harder soled shoe. I was under the assumption that he would stay in the soft shoes until he was walking more often than not.... so that brings me to my question, when did you transition to the hard soled shoes?
