DS started at 3 years, 3 days a week for 2 hours a day. It was a perfect time. We probably should have done some mom & me groups before to get him more socialized with other children. He is starting pre-k this fall which is 4 days a week, 3 hours a day.

If we can afford it, I would like to send our kids to Montessori preschool as early as the best programs start, which is typically 2.5. I think it's great for socialization, and I really believe in Montessori so I'd like to start that young. Depending on my work situation / what we do for childcare, however, we may only do part-time.

I enrolled my DS in a 3's class when he was 2.5, and a 4's class at 3.5. We both loved it and I'll do it again in a heartbeat with our DD. I think that preschool makes a difference, my DSD's both did not go.

I haven't thought that much about it, but probably around 3 I guess. I'll be a SAHM, and that's probably when we will have a second one anyway, so the timing seems about right-- they will get some extra socialization, get used to another caretaker, and I'll get a little one on one time with the second baby. I think it would probably be for a few half days a week, I guess? I would be doing it more for the socialization and getting used to going to school part than actual education, since I feel like I can probably do that just as well at home-- though I might be wrong!

@mrs. bird: I couldn't agree more! It would be awesome if LO starts to read early (mostly because I am selfishly looking forward to quiet reading time for myself too!), but other than spending a lot of time reading together, I'm not pushing it. You're totally right about kids having a natural curiosity--it's almost hard to keep up with my 2yo LO! :)

@honeybear: no LOs of my own yet, but I'm a nanny, former preschool teacher. They may not be reading by 4 like some of my nanny LOs have been, that's more of a readiness thing though, but they won't be behind unless they have delays. As long as they're home you are in total control over their environment & that's such a great opportunity to make it a stimulating & enriching one. Kids are curious & have an innate desire to understand the world, the more chances you give them to explore & follow that curiosity, the more they learn.

@mrs. bird: Are you a sahm? What did you do with your LOs that got them ahead?

@Kfamilie: I don't think toddlers need to go to preschool. The evidence on improved academic outcomes as a result of preschool is very mixed. That said, there are some good programs.

I have no idea. I'm a SAHM and in no rush to have her go, but I do want her to have some sort of structure/socialization when she gets a little older, and I think it will be easier on me when I have another LO if she goes to preschool. I'll probably just have her go part time, a couple days a week, a couple hours a day when she is 3, but that's not for sure.

I'm a SAHM, and we're probably going to send LO to Mother's Day Out at our church when she's two. She'll go twice a week for a few hours. We'll start her in preschool, probably montessori, for several hours 3 or 4 days a week when she's around three and a half or four. We do lots of play groups and other activities with her peers right now, but I think it will be beneficial and fun for her to learn to take instruction from someone other than her parents and grandparents, to interact with her peers without me nearby, to be in a school structured environment, to have new experiences outside of our world together that she can tell me about, etc. For us, I see it as enrichment to her life, but definitely a luxury, not a necessity.

If I have my way, our LOs will go for one year before kindergarten, and only half day a couple days a week. I'm not worried about the 'academics' they'd be missing. I have a pretty solid track record with LOs that are well ahead upon entering school. I'd rather have more time to spend enjoying our time together and experiencing life outside a classroom before we're revolving our world around a school schedule.

Probably 3 and a half or 4. I'll be a SAHM so I plan to do playgroup and activities before then, but I think it's good to get that socialization and school feel without mom before kindergarten.

I would have started my DD when she was not quite 3, but we found out just before that we would be moving. So instead of letting her start for just a few weeks, we decided to hold off. And finding a school that would accept a new kid mid-year was super tricky! But we found one that had a child who had just left, and it is great. Super close to our house, play-based (which was my preference) and absolutely neighbourhood focussed. Just what we were looking for! She only goes 2 mornings a week though. And she will start Junior Kindergarten in the fall.

We might start this summer when DD is 3. We would only havd her go three days a week, potentially 3 half days a week. It just seems like a good opportunity to get more formal education, plus I think she gets bored with just me and her little brother all day. ;)

I'd like to keep DD home until she's four and then do half day preschool. It's just my preference to keep her out of school as long as possible as I'd like that time with her. There are enough play groups around where we live that I'm not worried about socialization.

If I wasn't able to be a SAHM it would probably be a different story but as I can stay home with her, I'm in no hurry to put her in school. Mind you, I love learning and loved school as a kid, but I don't think it's necessary before age four.

charlie started daycare at 21 months. a lot of his friends went on to a 3's program at a preschool, but we just kept at the daycare.

he will start pre-k this fall when he's almost 4.

i think we'll probably send olive to preschool when she's 3 though.

We're planning to enroll our DS at 2.5 years old. It's very competitive in our area, so he's been on a few waiting lists since 6 weeks old.

I want to start him early for socialization. Right now, I live at my parents' house during the week since my mom watches him while I work. My poor DH is a bachelor during the week. Once he starts school, we'll be together again.

probably around 2.5/3. I'm a SAHM so I'd like LO to be in a pre school type setting for socialization and to get him used to a structured environment. I'll hopefully have LO #2 at that time as well, so having LO in school part time will give me some free time with the new baby.

And if not for daycare reasons and your child is under 4, how often do they go and what are your reasons for starting them in preschool? I am just curious-I didn't go to school until I was four but I am seeing that it is a current trend to be starting around 2.5? I was surprised because I didn't think I'd be thinking about school until 4 or 5. TIA for sharing!
