@Weagle: I think by 4 if not def 5 they will understand consequences. I remember my nieces and nephews at that age and by then they definitely understand.

I have LO pick up after himself. We sing the "clean up" song, but no real chores.

My son is three and he knows that when he is playing with his play dough and it falls on the floor, he needs to get out the vac and clean it up. It wasn't something I specifically taught him, but I guess he saw me doing it, so now he knows he needs to do it.

He brings the dishes to the sink and helps put the cutlery in the dishwasher. He also puts things in the garbage and can now put in/take out clothes from the washer/dryer.

He also cleans up his toys at night, into bins. I don't care what goes into certain bins, as long as they are up off the floor.

If he doesn't do what he is told, he doesn't get to do certain things. We've already implemented that, and he responds well

@locavore_mama: I think your child also has to be able to understand consequences over time for it to work. Otherwise, it's just really frustrating for everyone! I guess kids get to that point at different times based on their development. She certainly doesn't understand that an action at 1pm affects what will happen at 3pm. There's no true concept of time in her brain. I'm approaching it more as "chores that will become part of her daily routine" and an opportunity to learn about being part of a family than anything. I think we will probably use a chore chart to have a visual aid, but I can't imagine us being strict about it at all.

@Weagle: @Mamaof2: yea, that's what I meant. With consequences. ie if you don't clean up your room you don't get to go play, etc.

I was thinking around 4-5 too. I can't imagine "punishing" my child any younger than that! LOL

She certainly pitches in around the house but it's all in fun right now!

She does a couple things now, at 22 months. She gives the cat his treat at night and she helps pick up her toys.

I think we plan to start around 2. I think we're going to start with her putting her dirty clothes in a hamper and making her bed in the morning.

ETA: if we're talking with consequences, probably not until school age.

We'll really start doing them more around 2-2.5. Now she helps throw away her diapers, put away dirty clothes, unload the dishwasher, etc but it's fun for her. And there are no consequences if she doesn't do it.

I've already implemented them at almost 17 months. After bath she puts her washcloth and dirty clothes in the hamper and in the mornings she gets the dog's treat to put her in her kennel. She thinks of these as a game, but I think it's a good start :) She also has to help pick up her toys at night, and she does this at daycare too.

Great question. I don't know when. I'm curious when others started it as well. LO likes the dishwasher and knows where the dishes go. He also likes to help put clothes in the washing machine. I don't know when I start to encourage that plus others. DH didn't do many chores as a child, so I want to break that cycle long before it starts. I also won't put up with a family who doesn't contribute to the house either.

I was in my teens when I learned to do laundry and go grocery shopping because my mom had surgery. I remember a lady in the store being impressed by me when I had a question about an item.

Was just thinking about this!

And I mean chores like they have to do it or they won't get to do x, y and z. Not like yes, my 22m loves helping me put her pillow away and her dirty laundry in the hamper. But she doesn't HAVE to do any of that right now. :P

I'm not sure when we plan on implementing chores. But I definitely think it's important to teach our kids to pitch in around the house! I can't stand lazy teenagers.
