I always list the people in his life we are grateful for, generally choosing the ones who he has seen that day, but he'll start listing other people--it's often surprising to me who he chooses. He also often says "baby tummy" during this time, because we usually pray for his yet-to-be-born sibling. Last night for the first time, he really seemed to want to do all the talking, so I just let him. It was really sweet. Growing up doing that, it was such a distracted time for me, and I'm not sure how often I really considered myself to be talking to God (especially since I wasn't the one actually doing the praying). It was just habit. I think I would like to start the habit of praying before meals with LO, but we haven't really made an effort to do so yet. It depends on how my day is going on whether or not I set specific quiet time aside to pray in the am or before bed. My husband often leads us in a short blessing before we eat dinner but I never see him pray prior to other meals and I almost always forget to have LO &amp; I pray until we are finished with our other meals so sometimes I will thank god out loud after the fact. Not consistently. I pray with LO before he goes to bed, and then when I go to bed as well. My family always prayed before meals (well, dinner), but I didn't continue that with my little family. My ILs just dig right in. My husband tried to explain that an individual prayer said in the morning carries throughout the day and includes meals, which is why his family doesn't bless the food.
