I just counted and we have about six weeks until closing. It's going to be really stressful working full time!

I think our Realtor is feeling sorry for all the moving we're having to do. DH met with him today for the final walk-through, and he offered to be waiting at the house so that as soon as we sign the papers, he can let in the guys who are replacing our carpet...AND...the cleaning crew he's hiring as a thank you gift for hiring him!

I am SO thankful! I thought I'd be spending next weekend scrubbing floors, bathrooms, and the kitchen!

I would price out packers. The last few times we have moved we (or my husband's company) paid other people to pack and move. In our tiny NYC apartment it only took about 4 hours for 3 people to pack everything. When we moved in our current city, it took 8 hours for 2 guys to pack everything.

@Cherrybee: So interesting to hear about the chain and that whole process!

@hotchildinthecity: Four HOURS?! You're awesome.

We are under contract on a home but won't close for 3.5 months (just signed last week) so we are starting to clear out for staging in anticipation of listing our home in 6-8 weeks. We did get a storage unit and have put in the things we don't need access to for the next 3-4 mos: winter gear, books, some kid books and toys. I thought we were fairly good at not accumulating stuff but it feels like we have barely touched our house and the storage unit is already filling up :(

I started packing as soon as possible (we had like 3.5wks between signing the lease and moving day). E was great about not touching or climbing on the boxes that were stacked in the living room. But if you can afford a storage unit you should--it can get suffocatingly small trying to live around and then pack with so many boxes!

@Greentea: I used to love it! I have moved 9 times between 18 and 34 but having a LO is a total game changer - it's mostly her baby stuff in the attic!! I'm already feeling the stress!! Good luck with your move, too!

@Cherrybee: It probably can be done that way, but my brother is my real estate attorney and he's an hour and a half away. So in a way, it would be really tricky to coordinate move out/move in all on the same day (with meeting him to sign the closing documents in the middle)

@Cherrybee: Hmm, you make a good point! I think I would do it in the attic, we also have a ladder and hatch but between DH and FIL we have passed some pretty heavy stuff through that hole - furniture etc. My LO would definitely climb on the boxes and empty them if he could! I've not moved with a LO before so perhaps my logistics will need to change! Do you have any family nearby with space, we got away with storing some furniture at the ILs during our last move.

ETA god damn chains!

@MaryM: Ahh! Over here we have this concept where we are "part of a chain" and the whole chain completes on the same day. It's pretty weird because on "completion day" the first buyer in the chain (usually a first time buyer or someone buying a second house) wires the money to their solicitor who wires it the the vendor's solicitor, who wires it to the next vendors solicitor - so on and so forth. Meanwhile, everyone is sat around in their removal vans because they have handed their old keys to their Estate Agent and they are waiting for "the call" to say the money has transferred and their new agent will release their new keys. Then in the middle of this, all the solicitors take a 2 hour lunch (it happens every time) and nobody knows what's going on! So stressful!!

@Cherrybee: We had to get a storage unit during the staging. Also because we're selling our house two days before we buy the new one (because we need the profit to put down on the new one).

Our original storage unit wasn't quite big enough, so we ended up having to get a second one. It's killing DH that he's moving everything out just to have to move it again, but we couldn't figure out a way around it. Our buyer wouldn't let us rent back from her until we bought the new place because her lease is ending next week.

@Truth Bombs: I really wanted to rent a storage space but DH wasn't on board. He said I was trying to make things more complicated that they needed to be. Grr!

@Bubbles: How would you pack the attic stuff? More specifically, where would you put the boxes? You get into our attic by way of a loft-ladder so I can't pack IN the attic (you wouldn't be able to get the heavy boxes down the ladder!)... but I am scared that LO will pull stacks of boxes down on herself if I leave them about the house!

I start as soon as I know I'm moving. I start packing up books and decorative items that aren't necessary.

DH and I packed half our stuff before we listed our house so it would show better and look bigger. Once we accepted an offer (and knew we most likely wouldn't have to show it anymore) we got the boxes back out and started packing more. We move next week and are down to essential furniture (we've packed everything but the couch, TV, bed, and one dresser each) about half our clothes, and maybe a box or two of kitchen stuff.

We had already packed away a lot of what we didn't need on a regular basis and put it in a storage unit in preparation for selling our own house (wanted to remove clutter). In the US, turn around time from offer accepted to closing is usually 30-45 days so once we had an offer accepted we started packing right away. We left LO's room for last so as not to disrupt her too much. 30 days to pack was plenty for us, but we had a head start.

I would start now by getting rid of stuff - go thru any boxes you may have - go thru kitchen cabinets, etc

Pare down as much as you can!

We had a huge yard sale and got rid of so much stuff!

Were hoping to move this autumn but haven't even put our flat on the market yet - but I am aiming to start addressing the attic packing asap. - I HATE moving so anything I can do to make it less stressful at the time is worth it! For stuff we actually use day to day though I'd probably wait till after the contracts

When in the "buying a new house" process do you start packing?

Our offer was accepted on our new house a few weeks ago but we haven't exchanged any contracts yet. The average turn around time in the UK is 8-12 weeks because there is so much to be done between offer and exchange - agreeing the fixtures and fittings, searches, surveys, mortgage stuff etc. Once you have exchanged contracts, you usually get a week to organise yourself before the completion date - that's move day to you and me!

At what point would you start packing? I've got so.much.stuff to go through and the best thing would be to get started right away. But there's also so much that could go wrong, making our entire sale/purchase fall through. I know this is silly but I feel like I'm tempting fate if I start now!!

What would YOU do?
