I would definitely take away a paci earlier on (WJ stopped taking his once he found his fingers and LMW never took one) but I plan on letting my kids hold on to their blankies until they're ready to give them up. WJ is 3.5 now and doesn't use his blankie at daycare naptime anymore (sometimes he forgets to bring it with him, sometimes they can't find it at naptime, but he sleeps fine without it) but I like to make sure he has his blankie when he sleeps and naps at home or in the car. He also sleeps with a stuffed bear.

LMW sucks and chews her blankie so that makes is slightly more disgusting but I still don't plan on taking it from her.

@sloaneandpuffy: completely agree. DS is 2.5 and has lovies, mostly for sleeping and comfort. He's not addicted to them though and I see no reason to take them away.

That's odd that daycare wants him to give it up. My son's daycare has no problem with him (or other kids) bringing the lovey to school and having it for the day/naps, and these kids are all 2-3!

I don't see anything wrong with a blankie or lovey indefinitely! My almost 8-year old nephew still has is lovey (stuffed animal) and sleeps with it. He's not obsessive about it, but it's comforting to him on car rides, trips, and for sleeping. My sister slept with her blankie well into H.S. (not that she "needed" it either). It seems kind of cruel to take away a lovey or blankie. A paci I can understand.

My LO has a stuffed bunny that she only gets in her crib. I don't think I'll ever take it away. She is a thumb sucker though (has been since she was in my belly and we saw her at the NT scan)...we will address that once our pediatrician and dentist tell us to do so...she doesn't do it except when she's sleeping and at 20 months she doesn't suck her thumb all night...just as she's falling alseep.

DD is 3yo and we're trying to break her thumb-sucking at home, don't plan to take away her lovey anytime soon but she doesn't do/use either at the sitter's house.

DS is 10m and we plan to take away his pacifier around 1yo; he's never attached to a lovey.

I think blankie and pacifier are two different things. I recommend kids begin to wean of the binky at a year, but having said that my 16 month old still has hers for naps and bed time. What are you gonna do???

I think blankies for sleep only are just fine well into toddler hood.

You don't even want to know how long I had my "blankie" for ;) I still have a certain blanket (like a throw), I sleep with every night. I would never take away my LO's blankie/lovey. We will ditch the paci in a few months here though, she is 10 months.

Honestly? I wouldn't take away a lovey (stuffed animal, blanket, etc). I was nine when my blanket actually disintegrated and I didn't have a choice but to give it up. I was in no way negatively affected by keeping it so long.

A pacifier though, I think I will cut off by 3 if he hasn't done so by then.

DD isn't attached to any one thing. She did take a paci at sleeping times (and any other time she could find one). We took her paci at 17 months and it wasn't bad at all (she cried for only a few minutes at night). She does have a lovey blanket at daycare, but it's for snuggling not sucking. She also has stuffed animals and blankets in her bed.

Personally, I'm glad we got rid of the paci when we did, and it was much easier than I expected.

DS has been off the binky for a long time and has never had a "lovey" or blanket at daycare, but at home he has two loveys that he sleeps with every nap and bedtime, and we take them with us if we travel. I have zero problems with it- he doesn't really put them in his mouth, he more uses them like a pillow, but I wouldn't start to worry about home bedtime/naptime use of loveys for a long time.

My DD is almost 5 and still has two loveys which is her favorite stuffed animal and a washcloth with doggy attached. She only uses them for bedtime. DS still uses a pacifier for nap and night time and he's 22 months. I had planned to cut the binky out by 18 months but never had the guts to do it. I plan to do it after he turns 2. We'll see!

@littlek: @sloaneandpuffy: @BabyBoecksMom: I guess the reason they suggested us to not use it anymore is because LO use his blankie like a pacifier. He'd shove as much blankie in his mouth as possible if he gets one! LOL. He never liked using a pacifier though.

Does your LO put the blankie in their mouths, or just sleeps with it?

ETA: I am not a great fan of him using his blankie during awake time either actually (which I don't offer it to him), because he'd have the blankie in his mouth (like a dog) while walking around doing other activities. Nice and convenient way to wipe up and sample all the germs ;)

I don't see the point of taking away a lovie. The pacifier I get, because of dental reasons. LO stopped liking a paci around 4 months, so he self weaned. He still sleeps with his lovie though and I don't plan on taking that away.

I would take away a pacifier at a year or two, because of dental stuff. But I would NEVER take away a lovey. Ever. This is an important object that helps children feel secure, and it's common for them to stay attached throughout childhood.

We're at 18 months and she still has a blankie and pacifier. I think it's strange that your daycare said that you should take away the blanket (pacifier, I could see for dental development reasons). Like you, we only give it to her at nap/bed time, but if she sees either between those times, she'll freak out and *have* to have them.

I had a security blanket for a long time as a kid, and I didn't see any harm in kids hanging on to it, so I will let DD decide when she wants to go without it.

Olive and Charlie both have a lovey they like to use to sleep! But they're generally fine if they don't have it a particular day... and I don't think either of them gets it at daycare. Olive's lovey is just a burp cloth too though, so maybe she grabs one if she sees one!!

LO is 17 months now. We never used a pacifier, but he has grown to love his burp cloth since he was 4 months old. It has become his blankie, we still let him go to sleep with it. 2 months ago our daycare teacher told us that we can (should) start to lose it. In fact they no longer offer the blankie to him for his naptime. However when he's at home, I still let him have his blankie at nap time. I don't have the guts to take away from him as I am afraid he would continue to cry and won't go to sleep, or wake up and won't be able to go back to sleep! We don't give it to him during awake time though. If he did see his blankie, he would throw a fit if he doesn't get it!

I do see quite a few kids older than him who would still have a pacifier in their mouths, even in public. So I wonder, when do you take away your LO's binky or blankie? And when do you think is a good time to remove it from them for good?
