I also typically let stuff just run their course and treat symptomatically at home. Last time I took him in was when his fever was 103 degrees. I felt that was a little too high for comfort. We found it was a virus and nothing we could do, but it's peace of mind in case it got worse.
Also, if respiratory is impaired, I would bring him in. He had croup once and I was concerned about breathing.
rashes are a case by case basis.

If its just a runny nose/cough, I won't call because I know there isn't anything they can do. Unless it's an ear infection, they've never really given us meds. DS has a rash right now on his belly and legs where his overnight diaper rubs and I'm struggling on whether or not to call the doc. We've tried cortisone and it hasn't helped and he says the rash hurts. I'm leaning towards calling because I don't know what else to do!

When in doubt, I always call. So far the doctor has been good about letting us know if we should come in or not based on symptoms. Earlier this year they were both puking and he said not to come in (unless it got worse) and told us what to do. A few weeks ago DD suddenly developed a high fever and loud cough with labored breathing and he told us to come in.

I'm never really sure when to take them in. Most things I feel like just need to run their course. I'll sometimes call the nurse for tips but unless she thinks we need to go in we usually just ride it out.
