Recently LO had a fever for two days and then eye discharge. Once we realized his fever would impact whether we could send him to daycare we took him to the doctor’s office. He was diagnosed with a viral infection and given antibiotics to treat his eyes. After one eye med dose his fever was gone. We only had to keep him home one day instead of risking the chance of him being sent home and then mandatory out for the next day.

I would take him back in, that's a long time to have a fever to me. I say this as someone who rarely has made a visit to the ped besides for regular check ups. We've been very lucky though and have never had a fever last more than a few hours. I think it's worth getting him checked out again just in case.

After a week of fever our doctor ran bloodwork and found out DS had mono, which in kids is not usually a big deal and they get over quickly, but for him it just took forever to get better because his immune system is crappy to begin with. His fever was much higher though and didn't respond to meds, so probably not what you are dealing with, but I wouldn't be surprised if this keeps up if they do send you for blood work.

Hope he feels better soon and hang in there!

I always bring them in when they've had a cold and then get a fever because it's usually an ear infection. And if it's an ear infection they're allowed back at daycare. If it's not an ear infection they're not allowed back to school. My ped also told us that their ears can get infected from one day to the next, so just because it's not there at one visit, if the sickness persists they may still develop one.

@2littlepumpkins I may, although the nurses at our ped's office say 99% of the time "you should bring him in." I think just as a CYA.

@MrsADS: since you were already seen maybe you can just call and remind the nurse you were already seen and say it's low grade but ask what they suggest. Usually if my kids are recovering they at least run pretty normally in the mornings (98s-99s) and then a low grade fever in the afternoon. (Upper 99s-100s)

@2littlepumpkins that why I went in on Tuesday, which was day#3 of the fever, doctor thought it was a virus. The fever is pretty low - like 100 - ish and comes down with meds. Scary with the pneumonia, ugh!

@bluemasonjar that sounds exactly like what happened to DS in October, after not getting better, they put him on abx. 2 rounds because he didn't get better. He got better and now... here we are again. Ugggh.

I'm sorry :( My DS (also 2 yo and in day care) went to the pediatrician for a cough and congestion that had lingered for about 2 weeks and she decided it had likely turned into a sinus infection (green mucous) so gave antibiotics. But just this week his nose is running like crazy and he is coughing again but no fever so I am waiting it out at this point. Good luck :goodluck:

I always thought you were supposed to call after 3 or so days of fever? I usually go to 4 and call and see what they say. Six days doesn't sound normal if that's the temp all day long. But also on our exergen thermometer my dd gets up that high sometimes in the afternoon while not even sick or while recovering from a virus.

I'm very against unnecessary abx but I think I'd take him in. Something similar happened to Dh recently with the coughing and given he's an adult and was taking something for his fever and muscle aches and working so things got masked a little, but it turned out to be very severe pneumonia. Dd had a similar thing when she was three where it would seem to go away then not completely then get worse and it turned out she had croup followed by pneumonia. It might be nothing but I'd just check. Sorry about all the work you're missing, that must be very frustrating!

@snowjewelz yes ugh. We don't have any family locally, so we have NO backup except for us. And like what I am supposed to do, have a babysitter on call? I can't really. It creates a lot of tension between me and DH because I am so resentful I have missed almost a whole week and I am so busy right now at work. And not like I can work at home except during naptime because my 2yo flips out.

@mama bird that's a good point. He has an AWFUL cough. I think if he still has a fever tomorrow I will probably take him in to be checked.

I think sometimes a virus will weaken the immune system and lead to a bacterial infection. If the cough isn't getting better (and especially if you're hearing any noises in the chest when he breathes) it's a good idea to see the doctor again. That happened to DD a couple of months ago, and she totally needed antibiotics. The crazy bit is, it wasn't even obvious she was really sick, other than a low fever that wouldn't go away, and trouble sleeping.

And I'm sorry about the work thing. It's the absolute worst.

Ugggh I hate this. I am totally with you and I feel you about these constant and dragged out illnesses! And that it's so hard to find back up care, arrange who will take off, etc!

I would probably just see over the weekend first. I really only ever take them in to make sure it's not an ear infection.

@bhbee our ped's office is open a half day on Saturdays for sick visits, so if he still has a fever in the morning I'm going to take him back.

Work is the worst though. Thankfully they are understanding, but I'm SO behind and stressed to the max.

6 days of fever is worth a call to your nurse id say. See what they suggest. Last time my 2yo couldn’t get better his ears looked borderline at dr ... his eyes were getting crusty ... so i was pretty sure what was coming. She gave me a just in case antibiotic to take home and his fever came back (low though) so i gave it to him and he improved so quickly. But the wet cough he has again post another virus and i don’t think we can do much for that. For me i think the tells of something more are fever that comes back after going away and/or crusty eyes. I usually tend to just take them in on Friday so you’re not stuck going to urgent care if they get worse on the weekend.

Eta and I’m so sorry about work. It is SO hard.

@erinbaderin yeah, they checked ears and everything. Last time, he just wasn't getting any better so the doctor felt the virus had turned into a sinus infection. My husband helps when he can but I've definitely missed the most work.

If it's just a virus, antibiotics aren't going to help either way. If the doctor checked for ear infection and didn't suspect strep I'd probably just ride it out, but it's miserable and frustrating, I'm sorry! I don't know your personal situation but maybe your partner could pick up some of the missing-work burden?

So as a bit of background, DS is 2 and in daycare and for the past two months, has been basically constantly sick. In October, he had a bad cold with low grade fever (like below 101) for about 7 days. Doctor put him on antibiotics since it wasn't getting better. He ended up doing 2 rounds of antibiotics in October.

This past Saturday, he spiked a high fever (102.8) and then got his usual cold symptoms - green snotty nose, horrible wet cough, and kept the fever but it was much lower (101 and below). He was out of school Mon, Tues, and Wed, but went yesterday because he didn't have a temp in the morning and seemed a little better (but still with cold symptoms). I actually took him to the doctor Tuesday and she thought it was just another daycare virus and she didn't want to put him on antibiotics again (I agree!).

Well, today is Friday, day #6, symptoms are not any better and temp was 100.5 this morning so he's out of school AGAIN. I have missed SO much work the last 6 weeks and I am so behind and stressed. I am not a fan of taking antibiotics unnecessarily but seriously, this is crazy. Would you ride it out or take him back to the ped today or tomorrow?
