we did it at 1 (per ped suggestion since his teeth were starting to get affected) and for us it was the perfect age. i thought he'd have trouble sleeping since he used it to fall asleep but he didn't even seem to notice it was gone. we did keep other loveys (blankets) in his crib that he'd been using all along as well. so now he uses those to help him sleep

@JoJoGirl: haha it was a very involved process: we had a teddy bear with a zipper stomach, that we put the binky in, and then she could snuggle with Binky Bear. We also supported her a lot emotionally-- lots of back rubbing, soothing her, comforting her and telling her she'd be ok sleeping without it. She liked to hold our hands falling asleep so we did that. She also had gotten a tent for her second birthday, and it was up in her room, and she asked to sleep in it, so we let her, and she did so for quiet a while, a month or so, and I think that really helped the transition because she got to do something special, and it wasn't a place she was used to having the binky with her.

@erinpye: How did you do it at 2.5? HALP!

Also I have a cousin who is a dentist and told me 3 as well. But said shhhhhh, most dentists TELL you earlier than that, but it's really 3.

Dentist says before 3. We weaned oldest DD at 2.5 yrs, she was VERY attached to it and when we tried earlier, it was an absolute nightmare (she only used it at night by 2). Second DD still uses one at 19 months, but she's less attached so we may try soonish and see how it goes.

My son had his for naps at home and overnight sleep until he was gosh, almost 3.5 years old. I stopped replacing them and finally the last one, he just put in the trash himself.

The damage is done to their mouths and teeth if they have them past 11 months and I was such a wimp about it. When he began daycare at age 2 he wasn't allowed the pacifier at all and we should have just cut it out at night then and there, but we didn't.

LO will be 1 next month, and he uses them for sleep. I'm scared to take them away because he is a good sleeper (knock on wood) and I don't want to ruin a good thing! Right now he has 2 wubbanubs + 1 Angel Dear lovey in the crib. After his birthday, we're going to switch it out so it is 1 wubbanub + 2 lovies and see if he still sleeps well. He finds them comforting in the middle of the night!

LO1 gave it up easily around 16-17 months. He still used it for naps and bedtime at that point. In preparation of weaning him I toId him he didn't need it and they were for babies. He never took it after that. I had planned to take it around 18 months.

LO2 I had no plans but we forgot to bring it with us when we went away for a weekl around 15 months. He did fine so we threw them all away. Now I am regretting it because he wants to nurse alllllll night long. Ugh I am thinking about giving it back for bedtime.

Uhhhh, my lo had it waaaayyy longer than I wanted her to. I think a good age is between 2-2.5. Earlier if it's not super necessary for sleep. My lo became a monster about it right around 2.5 and it was way hard to get rid of.

My doc said 4-6 months but dd1 never took one. Dd2 takes them a little easier but really doesn't rely on one. So we'll see!

Longer. She's 2 and can't get rid of the stupid thing. I'm hoping to wean her when baby sister starts sleeping better at night. We really should have weaned her earlier.

We stopped around his first birthday, but by that point it was only when he was in the car or tired/cranky before bed/nap. When we sleep trained we did it without the pacifier and only occasionally gave it to him for sleep after that.

Longer. They stopped it giving it at daycare when he was maybe 22 months but he kept it at home for sleeping only until he was 2 years and 8 months. I realized he just associated his room and crib with it. So when we moved 2 months ago we just never gave it to him again and he has been fine. He asked for it the first 2 days but accepted my answer that we weren't able to bring from our old home.

We weaned LO1 around 1.5 right before LO2 came. We haven't really put much thought into weaning LO2 but I'm thinking before she's 2 but I'm not stressed about it either way.

What's a good age to wean from the pacifier? Did your LO have it longer or shorter than you thought they would?
