Hmmmm. My LO doesn't speak very much but he seems to remember things from weeks ago that he's only experienced once. For example, we went to my MIL's house and we were cleaning her TV screen with a swiffer wipe. Two weeks later, I bought a box of swiffer wipes and he grabbed one and started cleaning our own TV with it. So I know there are some things he retains in his long-term memory.

I used to think about the age 3 or so.....
Now that DS has hit age 7 that seems to have gone out the window & I'm starting to wonder if he'll EVER have long term memory! lol

I think around 2 or 3. I remember specific things from when i was around 2. I remember the daycare I used to go to, but only certain things about it like the warm they would give us because I hated it and the wooden puzzle pieces we would chew on. I also remember eating sand at my other day care when I was around 3.

From what I've learned, they have long term memory once they have complex sentence structure. (Something about language helping to set down memories... and Noam Chomsky and stuff!)

I have snapshot memories from before the age of 2, but then pretty solid continuous long term memories after the age of 2.

I can still corroborate memories that I've never discussed before with my parents to get dates on them. "Mom, remember when we went into that lady's garage and I fell and hit my lip and her black dog came up to me and was licking me?" And she'll say, "Yup that happened in September of the year you were 2." (notice I excluded the actual year so that I don't feel so old!)

@looch: Yep, I'm a preschool teacher and you wouldn't believe all the crazy things I hear about mommy and daddy. Especially from the kids whose parents are going through divorces...

@Andrea: not yet! we're still only at 2 syllable babbles over here! But I am sure some doozies are coming.

My mom's a kindy teacher, she's got the 411 on all the marriage problems in the class because of the kids...it's crazy what they say.

I think they have long term memory from birth. I am always astounded at the things my son does that I showed him once, two weeks ago. Now, when they start blurting stuff out inappropriately, as soon as they can talk!

Lol, my lo still doesn't remember things that happened a week ago. But I still make sure we're careful about what we say in front of her because I don't know when shell start understanding.

We're noticing more and more than our LO remembers things from months ago.

Like from this thread: http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/dh-declared-today-the-best-day-ever-in-the-last-two-years

The last time the DH had a beer in front of her was 2 months ago but she remembered that he is the one that drinks beer and what the beer bottle looked like.

Now I am getting a little scared about what else she can remember and blurt out months later!
