I am also surprised by all the 50/55 retirement goals! I don't think I will ever fully retire. I love what I do, and hope that I can continue to do it for a long time. With that being said, I think my husband and I definitely want more flexibility when we're older.

Never!
I'll always work, even if it's just a day or two a week. My 90 year old aunt works two days a week, drives, goes to the gym, etc. I want to be like her!

@Corduroy: haha same. I'd likely never be able to retire at 50!!

I'm not sure... I haven't even really started my career soo.... it'll be a long time. The upside of being a nurse, is that if I want to, I could teach it once I "outgrow" being in a hospital.

Wow, lots of 50s responses making me jealous. I wonder if those are purely wants? I'd want to in my 50s too but I probably will be closer to 65. I'm saving but not with a particular goal in mind.

@MrsTiz: That is what the church I just started working at is like too! Tiny tiny rural church 90% run by the most adorable little old retired ladies. Always a TON of food and "too many cooks in the kitchen" in the best possible way. It's a great environment to work in because there's always volunteers who want to help, and because I know that I'll probably be like them in half a century or so! :P

@ILoveLettie: that's awesome! At the church DH and I used to go to it was 90% ran by old ladies..all retired and threw themselves into working at the church! :)

Ideally, i'd like to retire at about 4:00pm today.
Realistically, we'll probably retire when we're incredibly old seeing as how our retirement fund does not exist. Need to get on that..

@littlek: I think it's hard for people to really know now. But I do think that with a comprehensive financial plan you can get a good idea of when you are in a position where you are very unlikely to outlive your assets. The biggest risk to successful retirement is a long term care event, but with long term care insurance and responsible spending we can often let clients know when they can comfortably retire the way they want to.

Just curious for everyone who wants to retire in their early 50s, do you worry about running out of money? Or do you have a pension and not worry about running out of money. Personally, I don't ever think I will be 100% comfortable retiring without making any money on the side. I'd be afraid I would run out of money and it's hard getting back in the job market once you leave.

I'm really lucky that I'm in a business where retirement is usually more of a process than an event. So I would like to start slowing down in my mid fifties and just take it year by year and see how much I feel like doing.

60's maybe. My parents retired, but lead a very full life with grandkids, consulting, etc. My dad kept on being called back to various consulting gigs because he's good at what he does. My mom was working on and off as an instructor before her mobility got limited. I want their kind of retirement. I don't want to be bored or unstimulated during it. Right now, they're doing a little getaway. So cool.

I'm really young (early 20's) so my opinion can definitely change, but I don't really plan on ever retiring. I'm passionate about what I do--church ministries--and it's the type of thing that even if I wasn't doing paid ministry, I know I would be one of those older ladies who was still super-involved and on lots and lots of committees, so might as well stay on and get paid, especially if I transitioned back to a part-time ministry position like I'm in now (I plan to go full-time once I graduate with my masters). My dad is the type who has always been working towards retirement--he's 51 and just went to half-time and loves it so much more than full-time that he might stay at that for the time being. My mom is the type who loves her job and never would want to retire. I'm really the same way.

You guys scare me! I know where we are at financially at 30 and there is NO WAY we would be able to retire at 50/55.

Technically if I stay at my job, I would be eligible after 30 years, which would be when I'm 54 but I still wouldn't want to try to live off that for another 20 years!
