I'm 12 weeks and starting to feel "heavy" while sleeping on my back, and it's how I always fall asleep! Trying to practice laying on my side but I always wake up on my back. I guess I will try the pillow...

My doc told me 28 weeks is when she recommends patients stop sleeping on their backs, or whenever their bellies have really grown.
I was a back sleeper, but getting a snoogle-type pillow really helped "train" me to sleep on my side.

I'm only 11 weeks, I have a habit of falling asleep on my side, but DH says that I'm always sleeping on my back when he wakes up and I'm still asleep.

I'm nearly 33 weeks and I still sleep on my back most of the time. I lay on my side to fall asleep but I can feel myself turning onto my back before I completely drift off and I usually wake up on my back as well. I don't feel any discomfort, haven't had any shortness of breath, and the baby stays as active as usual so I don't worry about it. My midwife also said that my body will tell me if I need to stop doing it but if I feel fine, there's no problem with it.

I am usually a side-sleeper, but I have slept on my back (or woke up that way) quite a few times. I am 22 weeks now, and sometimes it just feels good to stretch out from head to toe. I am sure that will change when I/ butterbean get bigger.

I started training to sleep on my side as soon as I found out I was pregnant. While I was being induced, they gave me a drug to take some of the edge off of the pain so I could get a couple of hours of sleep. During that time I had unknowingly turned over to my back and my daighter's heart stopped beating. It is a foggy memory (luckily) but I do remember waking up to a ton of nurses running into our room. They rolled me onto my side and gave me oxygen to get her heart going again. When we have baby number two, I will do everything I can to never accidentally turn onto my back.

I know that something bad doesn't happen every time you sleep on your back, but now I know a little too well why they do give you that warning.

I did that very early. I thought it would be easier to train my body into sleeping the right way earlier rather than later.

Okay thanks ladies! I'm feeling better about my back-sleeping tendencies :) I think that around 20 weeks I'll re-evaluate and see if I'm getting uncomfortable, but for now, I'll continue to enjoy the fact that I am getting pretty good sleep on my back!! I really appreciate all the comments :)
@sarbear: I may try that in the meantime!

I was always a side sleeper pre-preg, but for this whole pregnancy, for some reason, my back has been a more comfortable position. I make a conscious effort to sleep on my side, but more often than not I end up on my back at some point during the night. I'm 22 weeks right now.

I'm almost 35 weeks and still wake up almost every day (or during the night) on my back, despite the fact that I tuck myself in tight with both a Snoogle and regular pillows before going to sleep. Sleeping on my back is just more comfortable for my body, I guess.

i stopped around 19 weeks because it was becoming uncomfortable(i'm a stomach sleeper and that was really out of the question). my doctor said that around 20 weeks i when they suggest to go to the left side but you don't have to be completely on your side. he told me to prop a pillow under one side of my back so i'm slightly on my side and that was fine.

Around 17 weeks (I'm 19 weeks now), I woke up with some back pain after sleeping on my back. I started sleeping on my side, but I'm finding it very difficult to sleep now that I'm purposely trying to sleep on my side. I would much rather be on my back too, except that I'll wake up in pain. I don't have a pregnancy pillow, but I've started sticking extra pillows around me. It's helping a little, but I really haven't had a good night's sleep in almost two weeks.

I think it's because of blood flow that you're supposed to sleep on your side (preferably the left). I don't think there is any problem with falling asleep on your back as long as you are comfortable and aren't having any breathing problems.

I am more of a side sleeper, but occasionally slept on my back pre-preg.

I made more of an effort to stay on my side around 20 weeks - supposedly it allows for best blood flow to baby. Try a snoogle pillow or other pillows, that will help you stay more on your side. I'm 36 weeks and still wake up on my back sometimes.

I'm at 17 weeks and am trying my best to stay on my side but still end up on my back when I wake up. I do have a pillow in between my legs, and that helps keep me on my side for while. I think it's more important once our bellies get heavy and bigger causing pressure by laying on our back, I think it will become uncomfortable more than anything.

I know that sometime in the 2nd tri you're supposed to stop sleeping on your back...but when is that supposed to happen? I'm about 15 weeks, and the only way I can fall asleep is on my back. I sometimes end up on my side, but if I wake up in the middle of the night and can't go back to sleep, being on my back is the only way that does it. Is this really bad for the baby? Basically, at what point do I need to break down and get one of those pillow thingies to help me stay in one position? :)
