I go to a university hospital/clinic for my healthcare. I saw a nurse practitioner for my yearly exams prior to pregnancy. I knew she wouldn't be an option for pregnancy care though. When I found out I was pregnant I called the women's clinic and scheduled an appointment with an OB I picked out from their website (and had hear some good things about). I basically had a couple OBs picked out that I liked and found one that worked with my schedule. Luckily my first choice was available!

I have always seen an obgyn for my annual well woman exams. My family doctor was a male when I was growing up, so...... Now I have a female family doctor and I suppose I could absolutely see her for TTC issues. But I still like having an obgyn for that stuff.

EAT: @theotherstark: I seriously did call my obgyn and request a "preconception" appointment. It was absolutely worth it.

I was in the same boat, and just decided to go ahead and get established last month. We stopped BC in September, I saw my PCP for my annual in November, and then in January called to set up a new patient appointment. I was in the middle of a super-long cycle, which contributed to the timing, at least subconsciously! So, to answer your question of when, at least if you're looking to go to an OB/GYN, I'd say, "Whenever you feel like it!"

@wonderstruck: Ha, good point. Although I feel like I would like the peace of mind of a blood-test confirmation.

@SweetiePie: That's a good point. I think for my next physical/pap, if I'm not already pregnant I'll look around and try to get in to see an OB/GYN rather than my PCP (who I am not greatly attached to anyway).

I think it would be helpful to see an obgyn for a consultation as you're ttc. It's good to have a professional to ask questions of and get to know. Then when you do get pregnant, you're already an established patient. Or you might realize you don't like the OB in the consultation and keep shopping around.

I'd been researching what midwife/hospital I wanted, and once I got my bfp I called and made an appointment. I don't really see the need to go to your pcp first, the pregnancy confirmation is practically just a formality at this point with how accurate HPTs are.

I went to my gyn to confirm the pregnancy (no appt, just went in for blood work), but she didn't do ob so once it was confirmed, I made an appt with an ob for 6 weeks.

After my BFP, I went monthly to my family doctor but was seen by his nurse practitioner until 28 weeks. I then was transferred to an OB for the remainder of the pregnancy. I saw her every two weeks until 36 weeks and was then seen weekly.

I saw a new OB/GYN for my annual pap and a preconception visit. I probably wouldn't have gone in right away unless I had been due for a pap. I did, however email her first to get her opinion. She said I didn't need to come in unless I was due for an exam. The only instructions she gave me as far as TTC were to take prenatal vitamins and have sex!

I went to see my OB/GYN for a preconception visit and to get my pap smear done (and we did a TON of blood work before TTC). Because I wanted my hormones checked- I started seeing a reproductive endocrinologist 3 months before TTC.

I've been going to an OB/GYN since puberty. I think annual paps and check-ups are really important.

I was due for a pap around the time we were about to start ttc (overdue actually, oops), so I went ahead and booked that with an ob/gyn. That way I felt like I had a real reason to bother going in, and I got to meet them. Due to moving and other stuff I actually switched, but had I liked them (I wound up not) and not moved, I would have stayed with them.

So....since I just did this yesterday, I'm hoping this is helpful info  . I first called the OB I saw for a GYN check-up in October. I wanted to be "in" with him as I hear he's great. When I called his office yesterday AM to report the BFP, they set up a first 8-10 week appointment (which will actually be about 7.5 weeks for me), and said if I wanted a blood test confirmation to go through PCP. I had an (admittedly awful) PCP appointment where they tested urine and then blood. They then said for all future pregnancy things that the OB takes over.

Hope that helps!!

I was terrible and didn't even have a PCP after I finished grad school (so for a couple years). I called the midwife when I got pregnant. I saw her the whole time and then after the baby arrived, I had to go find a PCP at that point! So I did it backwards. Actually I wish I could still see my midwife for regular gyn stuff but she only sees pregnant women. :/

I started seeing an ob/gyn for my annual exams rather than a pcp when I was 22, I think, except for a brief break when I moved for grad school, and then I had one annual at my university's health services office (which is my pcp). I switched to an ob/gyn though who I saw for 2 years/2 annuals before bfp

My PCP always did my annual exams so when I started TTC I asked her for an OB referral. I wanted to meet with the OB before I was pregnant just to make sure she was a good fit so that I didn't get into a situation where I was already pregnant and I didn't like the OB and then I was scrambling to find another option.

I saw my PCP to confirm the pregnancy with a blood test, and then after that I started seeing my midwife (around 10 weeks). If I had stayed with my PCP, they would have transferred me to an OB/GYN around 25 weeks. In my city/region, it seems you only see an OB/GYN if you've got problems (like irregular pap tests, etc).

For years I've gone to a midwife (at a practice with OBGYNs and CNMs) in lieu of a PCP. I have no health issues so my annual women's well visit/pap is all I need. Before TTC I switched practices so that I can deliver in a particular hospital, and because I didn't care for one of the OBs at my old practice

Saw my PCP for annuals, etc. Didn't switch to OBGYN until after my first pregnancy (ended in early miscarriage). But they had me in the system when I got pregnant 4 months later and was able to order blood work so that was really helpful. My OBGYN also has a midwife in the practice so I'll hopefully deliver with her at the hospital if things go well.

Like the others, I've been seeing an OBGYN for annual exams since I was 18 or so.

When I came off BCP and had irregular periods, I started seeing an OBGYN who specializes in NaPro fertility methods to try to sort me out. I saw her as soon as I got a BFP.

My story is unnecessarily complicated, but that's what modern medicine has done for the birthing process and what cities have done for super yuppies, I guess.

Before we started TTC, I knew I wanted to see a MW, but I also knew I wanted to deliver in a hospital. Turns out that there was *one* really good hospital-based MW practice in my city and getting in is super competitive. So I booked my next annual with that practice so I would be "on their books" when I got KU (I was hoping this would give me an edge when it came time to get accepted). When I started having issues, the MW I saw for my annual referred me to a pelvic pain specialist in the same hospital practice and I started seeing her to diagnosis and treat my endometriosis. When I got pregnant, I called both - my endo doctor and the MWs - right away. My endo doctor scheduled me for an early ultrasound (because endo = higher rate of EP) and betas. The MWs scheduled me for a first appointment at 7 weeks. I started seeing the MWs for prenatal care, and didn't see my endo doctor again until after DD was born (when I went back to her for endo treatment).

I saw a gyn as my PCP-- so I could do one annual visit for lady things as well as general check ups. But, she was only a gyn, not OB, so I knew I would have to switch when I got pregnant anyway. When I was due for my annual appointment, which happened to be right around when we started TTC, I had a well woman visit with the midwife practice I planned to use when I got pregnant. I then called and scheduled my first prenatal appt with the same practice after I got my BFP.

same as MAE; I've been seeing an OBGYN since I was 17 for BCP. You can technically just go start see an OBGYN to get an annual exam and to tell them you're TTC!

I recently went t o a new OBGYN after moving, and after I told them I'm TTC they gave me an ultrasound to check things out! I asked the tech if she could tell whether I ovulated too haha. She actually said she thought I did b/c she saw shreds of something (I forgot what)!
