It's funny you should ask this today because earlier this afternoon we were playing and I was saying "come on, walk to mummy" and I had this lightbulb moment where I realised that I actually felt like her mummy - like completely naturally. I'm not sure when it started happening but I think it was a sliding scale effect, the more confident I got the more I felt bonded to LO and the more I identified with the role. It has only been in the last few weeks that mummy has become a part of my actual identity and I have felt at home with the title. She's 1.

I still think sometimes "how did I end up with a kiddo?" and I'll look at her when she's with my parents or DH's parents and for a split second I forget she's my responsibility and not theirs! LO is 10 months.

I'm glad it's more common than I thought!

D is 7 and it's still weird being his mom. It's weird to be talking about school stuff and all. I feel like I was just in 2nd grade lol.

I'm just now feeling like she's mine more often than I am not! Though yesterday, I looked at our reflection in the mirror while I was holding her and rocking her to sleep, and I felt like an imposter. I can't describe it- just that she looked so out of place with me. But I am starting to be more confident when I say that she is my daughter...LO is 16 weeks old.

okay reading this and the comments to it is making me feel SO much better. I'm only three weeks in but I've felt so bad that it still hasn't seemed to hit me yet, and I don't feel that crazy connection. Glad to know it just takes some time.

Lol - I had that feeling recently. LO was 9 months old and her aunt (DH's sister who lives far away), was carrying her. I was walking behind them and had this overwhelming feeling that LO was SIL's daughter. And then LO wanted me, and it was all better.

19 months and I still have times where I can't believe she's my kid and I'm her mom. I tell my husband all the time that I have this weird feeling like she doesn't belong to me...like she's her own little individual that just so happens to live with us. An awesome roommate if you will. It's hard to explain.

My LO is 13 months and still every once in awhile I kind of forget that I'm the mom and not the nanny :) I think it's just because the idea of having a kid and being a mom is such a weird identity adjustment

Don't get me wrong, I love him. But I keep having this thought lately when I hold him or look at him that geez, it doesn't seem like this is actually my kid and maybe his parents will come for him soon. I don't know the person I am when I'm caring for a baby, if that makes sense.

How long did it take for it to sink in that it was really your baby? And you're not babysitting, that is the new you for the rest of your life?
