I work in a lab, and if it only says the month, then I toss at the end. If it was really dangerous to use past the 1st of the month, it would also include the day, not just the month. And also, in your case, I'd bet that the fever reducer just won't work as well after expiry (ie, not as potent).

@jholler25: Good to know this based on your job experience, thanks!

I did end up throwing the meds away only because I was worried about the effectiveness and I want DD's fever to go away asap.

I used to be a drug rep for blood pressure meds, and if we noticed a dr had samples that were expiring in the current month, we were not required to throw them out. We just told the doc he had them and to give them away so they wouldn't expire. So I think you're good until at least the end of the month, even by FDA standards.

We didn't throw them out until the month following the expiration date, per FDA regulations.

Since the dates are usually pretty generous anyway, I would say you are definitely safe until the end of August. I don't consider that past expiration at all!

For myself, I'll take things well past their expiration, but I'm sure I'll have different standards for LOs.

It depends on the med. I have an injection that I take that's pretty dangerous to take after the exp. date. I thought all of the dates were generous like everyone is saying, but luckily my DH called to make sure before I took it and they said no way for that one.

I think medicine expiration dates are really generous, I would still use it. It's not like it becomes toxic or magically stops working once you hit the expiration date, it will just gradually lose effectiveness. I wouldn't purposely keep using expired medicine, but if I needed some and all I had was expired I'd probably use it until I got to the store to get more.

I would just toss it even though its probably still good to use. Rather be safe than sorry

I have two bottles of children's fever reducer that expires August 2012. Do you think it is Aug 1 or Aug 31? Since it's for the DD, I have been reluctant to use it but maybe it's ok? Toss or use this time?
