Between illnesses and teething, my guy was a very weird about food and milk from 9 to 12 months. I worried so much but babies know better than us what they want and need.

My son was a boob fiend and slowed down a little once food was introduced at 6 months, but really his demand for BM increased and decreased at times. It increased for teething and growth spurts, of course. Then other weeks he didn't ask as much or nurse as long because food held his attention.

Wow!! This is so interesting!!! I had no idea that it would decrease like you all are saying this early!

@kiddosc: omg to stress less about pumping would be so awesome!!

@2littlepumpkins: yeah, output seems to be fine;)

Both my boys started to taper right at 6 months and by 9-10 months they reduced drastically. I would say my current 10.5 month old is doing 16-20 ounces a day, with the largest feedings being morning and bedtime. The lunch feeding is hit or miss and he just takes enough to quench his thirst for the 430pm session. My eldest was barely doing 16 ounces at that point and was only doing morning and evening bottles by 11 months, each barely 4 ounces.

My first child dramatically decreased his nursing on his own once he realized he loved food. Do about 9 months. We nursed another 7 months or so, but just not as much. My second had to be pushed to nurse less and eat more when we hit 14 months and she was still reticent. As long as he's offered water to drink when he's served table foods I think you're fine.

So by ten months my LOs were on table food for breakfast, breakfast at daycare, lunch and snack at daycare and dinner. They only drank water during the day and nursed morning and evenings/nights.

DD definitely decreased her milk intake around 9-10 months. Daycare was struggling to get her to take her bottles and she'd only drink 2-3 oz at a time. She was eating solids fine and nursed with no problems, so I never stressed about it. It just meant that I had worry less about pumping enough.

Right around 9-10 months depending on how solids are going. It's not always an all or nothing, it's more of a gradual decrease in milk and uptake in solids. Then you switch nursing out for water and milk.

DS 1 hit a bad nursing strike at 10 months so we just weaned then.

I think it can still be "primary" even if they're drinking slightly less than they did before. Sounds like you just have a good eater and he might be a little ahead of schedule. :) My DD1 loved solids way more than I thought she was "supposed to" before a year, and she turned out A-OK. Keep it up, mama!

I think more around a year for both of my kids, once they really started eating more. I wouldn't worry about it at 10 months.

Edit, sorry I read it wrong at the beginning. But answer still stands. There's a range of when kids get better at eating and slow down with the milk. Maybe they can start with milk and then give food if you or they are concerned at daycare.

If he's eating and pooping I would go by that. And I did even as a bottle feeding mom!

My LOs are almost 10 months and my DS has been refusing to finish his bottles at daycare. Between that and a few other symptoms I was worried and called the ped. The nurse told me that this is the age where kids start decreasing the amount of breast milk they drink. We do BLW so I can't say how many ounces of puree he eats (as its all table food), nor do I know how many ounces total for the day since I nurse when we are together. So it is possible I guess that he is making up missed ounces through nursing and I just don't realize it.

But I always thought BM or formula was the primary source of calories during the first year so I'm confused.

Help! When did your LO start needing less BM?
