We have set times and if she stays later hanging out it's on her. I try to say, "it's 5:30 I've got the kids now" usually it's a pretty quick in and out.

Time starts around when I told her to be there. I don't necessarily pay if they show up 5-10min early, but I also don't dock them if they are running a little late (happens!).

Time usually ends when I/we get back. Again, I usually round all of the time/money up to make payment easier, so I rarely take into consideration the extra 5-10min we might talk on the end. I also don't factor in if we drive someone home.

I did have one sitter who brought her infant with her, and she would often finish up nursing him as we chatted, so those talks would be longer than a normal one. She kept track of her time and didn't bill me for that, even if it ended up being 30min. But she also wasn't really watching my kid at that point :)

One exception is our standing date night sitter -- I pay her for 3h of sitting even if we aren't out for that long. It's usually close (within 30min or so).

Time starts when she walks in unless she's early. Ex: if I asked her to come at 7pm and she comes at 6:45 because her train was early, it's still 7pm.

Time ends when I get home OR the time that I told her before she came - whichever is later. Ex: if I said I'd be home 10pm and I get home early at 9pm because I was tired, I would still pay till 10pm. If I said 10pm but I come home 10:30, I'd pay till 10:30, obvs. We actually always pay a 3hr minimum too for Saturday nights.
If she chooses to hang around and use the bathroom or chat after, that's on her.

When she arrives until when she leaves. I always err on the side of whatever hours I had proposed to her when we set up the date - I always say something like "we'll need you from 7:30-10:30 on Friday night" so I figure that's what she is anticipating.

@babypugs: That's what I do. I pay when we walk in the door and then if she wants to chat, fine. And we have one that is suuuuuper chatty and will talk forever.

From the time you ask them to come until when they leave. My sitters tend to arrive early but I'm not paying them for that extra time, you know? Like if I say 7pm and they get here at 6:45. But I also round up for the end time, so like if i got home at 10:30 but we chatted until 10:45, I'd pay her until 11. So in that case of being here 6:45-10:45, they still get 4 hours because I'm thinking it's 7-11. If that makes sense!

Our nanny has a set start time and end time. If she says past her end time by her own volition (i.e. talking to me about her personal matters), she does not get paid. That rarely happens though and I'm very cognizant of ensuring she is able to leave on time.

@Truth Bombs: We do the same - always round down for the sitter's arrival time and round up to the next hour regardless of when we return during that hour.

From when she arrives, to when I get home. And, I always round up (so 2 hrs 10 mins of sitting is paid as 3 hrs.) Have to keep them happy!

From when she arrives to when we return. We've never had super chatty babysitters, so they are all gone within 10 minutes of us returning.

We have agreed hours, and I'm pretty direct. So even if we are kind of chatting about the day, as soon as our time is up, I say, "Oh look, it's almost 4:30. I'll take the kids so you can get going!". There have been a handful of times ever that then our nanny will say, "Let me just wash out LOs lunchbox before I leave" or whatever and I don't pay her extra for that 2 minutes or whatever. But that's a rare occurrence.

However, we always pay extra if she is staying late for us--if I'm running late or have an after school meeting or whatever. Or if it's only a difference of 10 minutes, then I let her go early another day to make it even.

From the time she arrives to the time she leaves- I would not mind the chatting as long as it's under 15-20 minutes total. I appreciate that I don't have to pick her up or drop her off so I tend to round up, but she's 15- not much of a chatter unless I instigate

If you have a babysitter, when do you start counting their hours for pay and when do you stop?

When the sitter walks in the door or when you leave the house? Does it stop when you walk in the door or when they walk out the door?

I'm asking for those who may have super chatty sitters who like to hang back and chat about non-babysitting related stuff for a while :)
