For us, we had all of those same issues. It got better at 8 weeks good at 10 and now that dd is only waking once at night to feed its great! I'm with you. I can't say I enjoyed the firsf two months but when the baby starts smiling and interacting it is a lot more fun. We re at fifteen weeks now and it's fun to sing, play, and smile together. I had days where I cried thinking I wasn't good at being a mom when I thought as a kindergarten teacher I was a natural. Hang in there, it does get better and I hear 6 months and on is so much fun!

@Portboston: I didn't enjoy the newborn phase at all the first time through. My suggestion is to take lots of pictures and videos (even if it looks like they aren't doing anything). Then you can enjoy the newborn phase retrospectively when you've had more sleep.

Thanks for all the responses. It's good to know I'm not alone in feeling this way and that it does in fact get better. I was starting to feel like maybe I'm the only one who doesn't enjoy it! Seems like consensus says 8 weeks is usually a small turning point!! I'm so stoked to hear that! Hoping my LO gets there quickly!

Hugs to you! I hate the whole "you should be enjoying every moment" pressure -- sometimes it just is crappy and you're tired and it seems like the longest day/night ever. BUT it does get easier, and I agree maybe around 8-12 weeks when you start getting smiles and coos and a little more sleep. And then all the sudden they are 5 or 6 months and sooo fun and it only gets better from there

@Portboston: Hugs mama! I totally felt this way with my first and then felt guilty about not taking advantage of my leave. I agree that as they get bigger it gets better and this phase will hopefully be a distant memory soon. But in the meantime you can feel frustrated with this stage and find ways to take care of yourself to get through it. You are definitely not alone!

I HATE the newborn stage. It was awful with my first and though my second has been easier (he's 4 months) I still don't enjoy tiny babies very much. For me, 3 months was a big improvement and things got fun around 6 months.

I'm so sorry you're feeling this way, but you are definitely not alone.

I find between 8-12 weeks they totally turn into tiny people. They start to social smile and it makes all their grumpiness worth it.

Hang in there, mama! It got better for us around 8 or 9 weeks? Weeks 5-7 were really hard though - LO would cry and cry and cry for hours every night until she fell asleep around 10pm. It was awful, but looking back it seems like such a short period of time, so I understand why people say it passes so quickly.

i'd say close to 12 weeks. 8 weeks is more common, but i was a stressed out mess during maternity leave because my LO had such a hard time falling asleep.

it's totally normal to feel the way you do right now.

3-6 months. Hang in there, know it ends and gets better. It doesn't feel like it now but once you're out of it it will have felt like a blink of an eye.

I'd say around 8 weeks? We didn't have quite as many issues but my first LO started sleeping for 6 hours (at least) straight at that time and I became a more functional human. Then it gradually gets even better until they are 6 months, when I remember thinking life seemed MUCH better. Hang in there, Mama!

My LO is 5 weeks old this week and I'm wondering when I'll start being able to enjoy him. Everyone says to enjoy the time they are young because it goes so fast but how the hell am I supposed to be able to enjoy this when I working on 4 hours of sleep & dealing with a cranky baby all the time? Granted we've had a few extra hurdles then normal (jaundice, too much weight lost, nursing trouble, lip/tongue tie and everything that goes along with that, & now silent reflux) but I just can't fathom when the light at the end of the tunnel will come. If he's not sleeping, he's eating or fussy because the reflux is hurting him. There's very little time when he's awake and happy. It makes me so sad!!
So mamas, when did you start enjoying your little one?
