@hilsy85: yes that is what i have been doing the past week and a half since his doctor appt. I only give the paci when it is time to put him back in his crib (after he stopped nursing) or we both just fall alseep and end up cosleeping and i may give it then too. I want to cut it altogether but am wondering how he will sleep without it.....i guess i just have to try it out and see what happens!

@PurpleUnicorn: ah we have also dealt with weight issues, since LO was 4 months old. So you're planning to nurse for night wakings instead of offer the paci at all?

@hilsy85: ya the main reason we decided to wean it is because doctor said he hadn't gained enough weight so i need to nurse more! But i figured i might as well cut the paci altogether before he gets older and attached.

@PurpleUnicorn: that's great then! We only gave it up because we sleep trained and it didn't seem to make sense to replace one crutch (nursing to sleep) with another.

@hilsy85: i've cut giving the paci in the MOTN to get him to stay asleep and have gone back to nursing when he wakes rather than try paci first. it seems to work because he falls alseep without paci alot now, but i still have it on hand.

We cut the paci at night cold turkey, because he would wake up multiple times, and we thought cutting the paci might help him figure out how to self soothe. We use it occasionally for naps and in the stroller/car. I never just give him one during the day if we're playing.
ETA we did this when we sleep trained, at 6.5 months.

P weaned herself when she was about 7.5 months when we go implement comfort nursing (she also started self soothing by scratching the bedsheet around this time). Before that I still had oversupply & with her tummy issues we just couldn't swing comfort nursing.

L is 6.5 months old and i have started weaning the pacifier in an attempt to get him to gain more weight. I think we may have been giving it too much before.

I've found it was really easy to cut out most uses and I was amazed at how often i was giving it unnecessarily before. But now he still takes it to stay asleep (I nurse him to sleep, then transfer to crib and give him paci, it usually falls out shortly after). I also give it in the car for fear of a meltdown because it is not practical to pull over constantly and I can't drive when he is crying hysterically. Though for short, local car rides he seems fine with or without the paci.

Finally, I give it sometimes when trying to get him to nurse to sleep - if he is over tired/agitated he refuses the breast until i relax him with the paci for a minute.

I am hoping to cut it altogether - any tips on how you did it? And I am curious to hear your reasons too.
