I didn't start to wean until LO was close to 13 months old. I was pretty sure LO had a dairy allergy. Once that was confirmed I introduced soy milk in a zoli cup at each meal. He would take a bottle before his naps, and I dropped the nap bottles cold turkey. He didn't seem to mind at all. My LO dropped the morning bottle on his own, and the hardest was the nighttime bottle. I decided that DH could continue to feed LO a nighttime bottle until my frozen breast milk ran out, which happened a few weeks later. I could tell that my LO missed it, and it took about two day for him to fully adjust. We also changed our nighttime routine accordingly (rock & sing a song instead of bottle). By 14 months he was officially off the bottle.

@T-Mom: thanks!! I'm a little weary to mix whole milk with my breastmilk because my LO has been rejecting formula (plain and mixed with breastmilk) for the past few months in a sippy and a bottle. I don't want to waste any breastmilk because I don't pump very much! I think I am going to start offering a sippy with whole milk at meals. He loves drinking from a sippy but he definitely has a preference for water.

I'm dreading the bottle weaning. He's almost 9 months and still loves his bottle. I'm hoping he'll just suddenly be over it and more into food in the next couple of months. It is really confusing.

@Mrsbells: That's why I'm wondering if I should try putting the formula in a sippy cup. We've been offering sippy cups of water at mealtime, but if she's not taking her formula from a bottle during the day, maybe we need to give her formula in her sippy cup?

For those who are breastfeeding, my mom told me that I self-weaned starting at 9 months. At that time, the doctor told her to just start me on cow's milk, since I had never had a sip of formula in my life, and it was pretty silly to start me on formula so close to 1 year. That was a different time though, so that might not be the consensus these days...

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who is completely confused by weaning!

subscribing too--this is so confusing. Our pediatrician recommended getting my daughter on 3 meals per day, 2 snacks, and completely off of formula by 1 year. He wants me to start introducing cow's milk now. This all surprised me, but as we have been on nutramigen for 9 months, I'm pretty anxious to stop spending so much money on powder formula and ready to see how she does on milk. Of course she's teething now and my ambivalent eater is all of a sudden now more interested in the bottle than ever before, so I'm not sure now is the right time to reduce bottle size and introduce more food. I'd love love love to see a post on this by a bee with a formula-fed baby.

@littleveesmommy: There was definitely a transition/rejection period. He was so used to getting his milk in a bottle that he would push it away if I gave it to him in a sippy. That's why we kept up with the bottles as long as we did (actually he still gets one in the am at 16 months, embarrased to say :-/ but not stressing over it). He has gotten better over time though, and he has milk with his meals now and just the one bottle in the AM. Give it a try though, you never know what will happen!

@T-Mom: Was it hard to get your LO to drink milk out of the sippy? DD currently gets water in a straw cup during meals and any other time she is thirsty, and she gets milk in bottles. Did you LO take right to have milk in sippy's or was there a bit of transition/rejection period?

@Sammyfab: I waited until a year to introduce whole milk, but the the transtion was really easy. I just started mixing in the whole milk in the bottle in larger % of whole milk until it was all milk. I do have a friend who started offering whole milk to all 3 of her kids at around 10 or 11 mo, at the advice of her pediatrician. One of her kids actually ended up having a reaction to the milk, which was stressful since she was EBF and her supply was dropping. But after he hit the one year mark, she tried again and he was fine. So you may just want to wait until 1 yr.

To respond to the original post, when DS was really getting into his solids, he definitely reduced his milk (breast milk) intake during the day. We started offering the bottle separate from meal time and a sippy of water at meal time, and then gradually he moved to having a sippy of milk at meal time and bottles morning and night.

Subscribing because weaning is definitely very confusing. Bottle vs Sippy and how much a day now that they eat more food. o_O

Today is actually day 1 of my attempt to wean DD off BM at 11 months 9 days. She gets three 4oz bottles during the day (along with 3 meals and a snack), so today we are doing 50/50 mix of pumped milk with whole milk. I just called my mom and she said DD gulped down the bottle like normal. Success! I was worried she would reject it because of the difference in taste but guess not. Although it's just day one... so let me not jinx it.

Ideally I wanted to hold off introducing whole milk until after her birthday but I've been super busy at work and she's naturally been nursing less on weekends during the day, so my supply took a bit of a hit. I only pump once a day now so if we continue EBF then my freezer supply will be gone pretty quickly since that one pump session is nowhere near enough for her daily intake. I figured if we do 50/50 then I can stop pumping at 1 year and still have enough frozen milk for 25BM/75WM for another month afterwards, then go to whole milk only.

Subscribing as well! The thought of weaning makes me nervous!

Did anyone introduce whole milk slightly before 1 year? Did anyone's LO reject whole milk? Are there any tips to get your LO to like milk (this is a big worry of mine!)?

My lo loved her bottle. We waited until she turned one and then quit cold turkey. I just replaced her bottle with a zippy of milk. At first she was slow to drink and only had a few sips, but by day two she was gulping the whole sippy down.

DD is 9 months old and exclusively formula fed. She is loving her solid foods these days, and it has started to become more and more challenging to get her to take her full 6-oz bottle of formula at mealtime. They have started noticing the same thing at her daycare too. I'm wondering if she's starting to self-wean... and if she is, if I should just put her formula into a sippy cup at mealtime, b/c she might prefer that. (She is still doing great with her morning and bedtime bottles, but the rest are challenging.)

If your baby self-weaned:
When did it happen?
How did it happen?
and
What did you do to help make it a smooth transition?
