@looch: That's a good point about movement. When I hit I think 6 cm, they started making me lay in bed for a half hour every hour to monitor baby and that was really hard and then after the half hour was up it was hard to start moving again so I would just rock in the rocking chair but I should have moved more. I think I needed to be drinking some gatorade or something too to keep my energy up. I'll have to look up the Morgan Method.

I thought it was pretty intense from a few hours in! I had cramps the night before that were I guess early labor and it woke me up all night but I could still ignore it. But a few hours after getting up and walking around it was intense..then it went back down for a couple hours..then it was intense again but I labored for over 24 more hours (and one checkup at l&d but didn't want to be admitted) before officially going to l&d and being admitted. The contractions pretty much hurt as much at 2cm as they did at 8-9cm, when I got my epi. The difference was how worn out I was. They were never regular and they were back labor, so even though I went in the second time at 8 cm I was still afraid they'd say I made no progress and send me home. I went in and told them that even if this wasn't labor I needed something for the pain, now!

The very worst part in my mind was in the car on the way to the hospital when I was pumping to try and increase the intensity of my contractions and was 'fighting' each one. They were terrible and painful and I was miserable. When I finally got in eyesight of my doula and she started to coach me through each contraction I was much better. Relax ladies and don't tense up and fight the contractions, give into them, it's much better! lol!

@Maysprout: I had an intervention free birth, no meds, equipment or episiotomy.

I really didn't do any method, I did read up on the Mongan Method, but for me, the key was movement. I was up and moving into all kinds of positions literally until the moment I pushed LO out, on my side.

@Cherrybee: Sorry! I started because I was thinking the thread about labor being more or less painful might give people an idea that all of labor is painful. My first 12 hours I was pretty sure I was in labor and there were some uncomfy parts but nothing bad at all, I stayed home and even went on a run/walk.

So I'm trying to think for this pregnancy when or if I want to get an epidural, I want to put it off since my contractions went from coming one on top of each other to stopping completely. But I did enjoy some aspects of the epidural so I'm not in any way ruling it out, just trying to figure out the happy balance.

@looch: Did you get an epidural at any point or what method did you use for med free labor?

My contractions felt like really strong menstrual cramps until my water broke at 6 cm. Then I suddenly felt like I was dying and it was terrible. I asked for the epidural around 8 cm but labor moved so fast that I didn't get it.

I had contractions all along in the third tri and was dilated slightly as well. It wasn't until I was dilated to a 5 that I felt like "holy shit I'm in labor" I started having monster contractions that were very painful. Probably got an epi when I was around 6-7.

I got an epidural at 3 cm with pitocin contractions. The epidural was the worst pain I felt. But when it wore off around 7 cm the pressure/pelvic pain was so bad!!! Thankfully the anesthetist came back and gave me more. I was in agony!

My water broke first, I was 5cm at the hospital and just starting to get uncomfortable (2 hours in). By 7cm (3 hours in) I asked for an epidural, I couldn't walk the pain off at that point. By 9cm (4 hours in) I was still waiting for the epidural and pretty much screamed for the narcotic pain shot.

After the epidural it slowed things down a bit, but I had a baby in my arms in under 8 hours. It was the wildest ride I've ever been on!

I got to 8cm and could still breath thru my contractions and rock (it is very soothing to me). But I did get my Epi at that point so not sure when or if they would have gotten worse. But my water didnt break until they broke it at 9cm (after Epi). And once they did that I was 10 and ready to go.

@runsyellowlites: Yeah, if I was having prolonged transition or pushing or something I'd want to find out if something is up, but other than that, no thank you. I went from 6 cm. to baby in arms in 20 minutes last time and was so discouraged at that last check, even though I was exhibiting classic transition behavior. It means nothing compared to how I'm acting.
Actually, I just doula'd a birth last week where there were no internal exams and the midwife and I depended on the mom's behavior and mood to gauge where she was at and it was freakin' awesome.

@Maysprout: yep, about 10 minutes after my water broke. I honestly wasn't feeling anything before then. It was like zero to 60. I was lying in bed watching TV, trying to get comfortable.. maybe had a tiny bit of cramping but nothing big. As soon as my water broke it was ridiculous. There was no build up, no progression, I felt nothing in my abdomen, it was all in my spine.

Right after I was sent home from the hospital at 3cm. My labor had stalled while I was there, and we decided to go home. Even as I was leaving the hospital I had to stop and cling to my mom and/or the wall to get through them while DH pulled the car around (but I had convinced myself since I was being sent home that it wasn't real labor). I spent two hours at home in agony...I wasn't prepared for back labor and had a lot of trouble getting through each contraction. When we went back I was ready to beg to be induced to stop the pain, but I was 5cm and clearly in active labor by then.

It ramped up again when around 8-9 cm when they broke my water, and my epidural stopped working. The pain was definitely worse but I handled it much better, so they didn't seem as bad? I had some great support who were able to keep my breathing on track--I was in the zone. I probably could have made it through to the end without getting the second epidural (which also stopped working) but I had been up and laboring for well over 24 hours at that point and was desperate for some rest.
