@raintreebee: He was out about a week and a half. They let him come back as soon as the sores scabbed up. But he really looked like hell for a month. It was horrible. He spent a week in the PICU on oxygen with RSV at 5 months and I still say our HFM experience was worse :crying:

@SeptMomma12: did you have to stay out of daycare a whole month?

I had to fly with LO for my brothers memorial service while he hadHFM. He was five days into it. Our doctor said to just cover his sores and to be extremely careful with diaper changes (Clorox surfaces). She said there was no way that other people would get it on plane because at that point it was only contangious through feces and sores. I would have been more concerned in a daycare type setting.

@Truth Bombs: That's what I thought, but I read conflicting reports that said it was after the fever was gone, another that said after no new blisters, and yet another that said they were contagious for 2 weeks. I'm thinking we are getting there because all his blisters are scabbed over at this point. He looks rough, poor kid!

@regberadaisy: Very true. I was curious because of church tomorrow, but sound like we better stay put for a few more days. I did find a large park with nobody around and we took a walk.

Our day care allows kids back once the blisters are scabbed over. DS had a really severe case and his blisters didn't completely heal up for a month.

Until blisters are gone or at least ALL scabbed over. You can be a carrier too.

I know it sucks. When my older got it I had to take a week off work and stay home with her. But it's better all around and the right thing to do. HFM is so brutal on the kids, and even worse when adults get it.

I know they say that once fever is gone it's safe, but at my dds Mother's Day out program, it seems that kids are still passing it around as long as they have blisters that haven't scabbed over.

My LO caught a nasty case of HFM going around - fever was Monday, blisters started Tuesday. We are past the lethargic feverish stage, and the blisters are scabbed over withe the exception of 2 blisters on his legs. We've been quarantined in the house all week but we are both getting restless - when is it okay to go out?
